Dirt!
This CD was my introduction to the world of the Arrogant Worms. And I'm really glad it was. I'll make this a song-by-song review, where I review each song quickly.
Dirt! begins with "A Man Has Needs." This is one of my favorite Worms songs ever. It begins as a slow love song for the first line or two, and then becomes serious comedy. It explains how a guy reallys loves his wife, but he's a man, and, like all men, his sports come first. He missed their anniversary and the birth of their son. It was beyond his control, his team was on a playoff run. This is definetly a Worms classic.
Next up, "Steel Drivin' Man." I'm not sure what to think of this one. It's pretty funny, but it gets boring after a while. I'd keep it on my "Favorite Tracks" list, but Dirt! has much better songs to offer. That is a complement to the Worms.
Then comes "Great To Be a Nerd." It's not an absolute classic, but it's still very funny. It shows life from the perspective of a nerd. It's very funny, but still not one of Dirt!'s best. "Great To Be a Nerd" is still a great song, but Dirt! has better.
Fourth is "Celine Dion." Like "Great To Be a Nerd," "Celine Dion" is very funny, but not one of Dirt!'d best. Apparently the Worms gave up stalking Shania Twain and are going for Celine Dion. Hilarious.
Now we get to "Rocks and Trees." I just love this song. There's something about it... It describes Canada very well. You know, I want to visit Canada soon. I can see all the rocks and trees and trees and rocks and rocks and trees and trees and rocks and rocks and trees and trees and rocks and rocks and trees and trees and rocks and - waterrrrrrrrrrrrrrr (and to watch the Mets beat the stuffing out of the Expos. Go Mets!)!
Then we have the "Gaelic Song." I love this one, too. It has no real lyrics, but it's funny to listen to a traditional Celtic dance.
Next is "Wong's Chinese Buffet." This is wonderful, about a guy who eats a lot at Wong's Chinese Buffet. The food's gorrible, but he loves it because there's so much. I like the final line especially:
"Eating here is worth the hearrrrrrt attaaaaaaack!"
Then we have "I Am Cow." This was my first visit into the world of worms, at least arrogant ones. It was on a comedy collection. My teacher played it for the class, and we loved it. Later, he sent me a comedy tape he made. It contained four Worms songs, "I Am Cow," "Rocks and Trees," "Scary Ned," "Steel Drivin' Man," and "Sponges." I decided to get Dirt! That's how it all started. Anyway, "I Am Cow" is a classic about cows, being made to sound like a mass in church. I love it.
Next is "Johnny Came Home Headless." Perhaps the best song on the whole CD, and one of the best Worms songs ever, this is about Johnny, a forgetful fellow who loses his head. I won't tell you how it ends, but I'll say that it's a sad tale, indeed.
Then we have "Heimlich Manuever." One of the four love songs (counting "A Man Has Needs) on this CD, this is about a broken-hearted man who falls in love with a restaurant waitress. There's one tiny twist, and I won't spoil it, but the title might. This song really touched my heart.
Next is "Scary Ned." I disliked it so much, I barely ever listen to it, so all I know is this. This is probably the worst song on the CD. Sorry, Mike, Trevor and Chris. Every CD for any group has one or two bad songs. It's not your fault :(
Now we have "Sponges." I don't know exactly what to say about this. It's strange, but in a funny way. I like it.
Here, we come to "Log in to You." This is OK. It's a love song about a guy who falls in love with a girl over the WWW. It's funny because he uses internet terminologfy to describe his affection. It's good, but not one of my favorites.
Last is the bonus track "Winnebago." This is, eh, how do I put it, very strange.
That's the dirt on Dirt! Bye! |
