San Francisco Rush 2049

San Francisco Rush is a Dreamcast Remake of an old Atari game. It features three modes: Race, Stunt and Battle. There are four cars on offer; the Rocket ZX, 8-Ball, Formula One and the GT, each with their own special characteristics.

The Race mode has a Ghost Race, Circuit Race, and a Free-Run Race. While offering nothing spectacular, the Circuit race will keep you coming back for more. The handling of the cars is decent, and the cars can make spectular jumps which you have to judge to perfection if you don't want to spin and crash. The three difficulty levels; Easy, Normal and Hard are challenging without being too hard, and the graphics are not bad.

The Stunt Mode is the strangest of them all, you are in an arena and you have to pick up as many points as possible by performing spins and twists. This mode will not last forever, but it is enjoyable all the same and gives you a break from one-player racing.
The only drawback is the one circuit, as too win another requires an impossible score.

Finally, the Battle Mode is what you would expect. Although, disappointingly, you can't battle against the computer, the two-player battle is exciting and intense. It's like a Quake III with cars. Weapons are different as well, ranging from the humble machine gun to what looked like a small atomic bomb.

It also has originality with its 'wings' mode. By pressing B in the cicuit and stunt mode the car uses its 'wings' and increases the chances of a safe landing.

San Francisco Rush is a clever game, and even though it's not an MSR, its enjoyment and longevity makes it well worth a buy.

Space Channel 5

Whether you have a taste for young girls in skimpy suits or not, Ulala is sure to change your life. There is a slightly dodgy story in that aliens have taken over the world, and to save it, you must help this sexy reporter to wipe out these dance-crazed Morolians by dancing.

The first thing that stands out are the graphics. They are top class, and wipe the floor with PSX dance games.

Anyway - the game itself. You have to follow the actions that the aliens give you, ranging from simple Up, Down Left Right at the beginning to A and B for shooting. The aliens give them at a rhythm, and should you even stray slightly from this you hear a noise, and you know you've got it wrong.

We recommend this game only to people with a genuine sense of musical timing, for those who haven't it can seem frustrating and pointless.
The game is fun to watch and technically outstanding, but the lack of a multiplayer mode means that it may not appeal to everybody.

Ferrari 355 Challenge

Yu Suzuki's done it again. The creator of Sonic the Hedgehog has lived up to his tag of ultra-realistic, superb gameplay and has produced F355. Another internet-compatible game, this has boosted Sega's reputation a lot.

There are two main modes in the game: Arcade and Challenge, both as difficult and complex as each other. There is also a practice mode which lets you get to grips with F355's control system and offers hints and advice. Beginners are advised to spend a long time in here, as to be thrown in at the deep end will be disasterous.
Indeed, this is no Crazy Taxi. It's much easier to brake hard for a corner than slide round it, like Sega Rally. Basically, one misjudged corner and you're off the track, giving you an impossible chance of finishing better than last. The graphics are decent, without being spectacular but the music is exceptional. The multiplayer is playable, and there's plenty to do. You might argue that yes, there is only one view and the game is too challenging but then again, it is F355 Challenge. Buy it!

Jeremy McGrath's Supercross

This game is crap. Really crap. It doesn't really have anything decent about it and you'll only want to play this stinker once.

For a start the gameplay reeks of a hurriedly done game, and the graphics are poor at best. It's these types of games that make the DC look inferior to the Master System.

The music is boring. You get no enjoyment from playing this game, and I've seen a tree look more like a motorcycle than the ones in JMSC.

A little more time and everything could have been alright. If the handling and graphics could have been improved, then it could be average. As it is, avoid it at all costs.
What were you thinking, Jeremy?

Metropolis Street Racer

Just when we think we're doomed to playing games such as Re-volt and Sega Rally, this beauty from Bizarre Creations comes along. This eagerly awaited game is not to be missed, and sets the DC further apart from the PSX2. For a start, the graphics are stunning, even better than PSX2. Every building is perfect, every car perfectly formed.

However, graphics are useless if the gameplay is wrong. But once again MSR excels. every turn is realistic, every handbrake turn perfect. And casual gamers will marvel at the ease of the controls.

It's MSR's little extras that make the game great. A radio feature has been incorporated and you can choose from country radio to dance and classical. The game also runs on an in-game clock. For example, if the time is 4pm in London, when you race in San Francisco you are likely to see daybreak, and it will be pitchblack in Tokyo.

If I had to pinpoint one slight fault in the game, it would be its immense difficulty level. 8 Chapters exist in the game, the average gamer will struggle to get past the 3rd. However, this ranks with Shenmue as one of the best games of 2000.
