THE NEGRO SPEAKS OF RIVERS
By Langston Hughes
I've known rivers:
I've known rivers ancient as the world and older than the flow
of human blood in human veins.
My soul has grown deep like the rivers.
I bathed in the Euphrates when dawns were young.
I built my hut near the Congo and it lulled me to sleep.
I looked upon the Nile and raised the pyramids above it.
I heard the singing of the Mississippi when Abe Lincoln went
down to New Orleans, and I've seen its muddy bosom turn
all golden in the sunset.
I've known rivers:
Ancient, dusky rivers.
My soul has grown deep like the rivers.
1922

To Be an Astronomical Voyeuress (Neighbourhood at 11:40)
The moonlight, lucid through tearful windowpanes,
rooftops glisten with the sorrow of the tempest,
smoke drifts away, unwanted and ashamed,
skies lie "Mezzo Rosso" with the coming of the morning sun
although the night is profoundest blue,
the celestial diamonds look down and smile,
and the pines reach out to heaven,
as Diana herself paves out her reflections,
the lights in the background,
purest butterscotch in colour,
so near, yet so far,
and the sky above us,
a world in itself,
beautiful, awesome world.

Sea Lullaby
ELINOR WYLIE
The old moon is tarnished
With smoke of the flood,
The dead leaves are varnished
With color like blood,

A treacherous smiler
With teeth white as milk,
A savage beguiler
In sheathing of silk,

The sea creeps to pillage,
She leaps on her prey;
A child of the village
Was murdered today.

She came up to meet him
In a smooth golden cloak,
She choked him and beat him
To death, for a joke.

Her bright locks were tangled,
She shouted for joy,
With one hand she strangled
A strong little boy.

Now in silence she lingers
Beside him all night
To wash her long fingers
In silvery light.

Stairway to Heaven

There’s a lady who’s sure all that glitters is gold
and she buying a stairway to heaven
When she gets there she knows if the stores are all closed
with a word she can get what she came for
ooh ooh she’s buying a stairway to heaven

There’s a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure
’cause you know sometimes words have two meanings
In a tree by the brook there’s a songbird who sings
All of our thoughts are misgiven.

Ooh it makes me wonder
There’s a feeling I get
when I look to the west
And my spirit is crying for leaving

In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those who stand looking.
Ooh it makes me wonder
Ooh it really makes me wonder.

And it’s whispered soon if we all call the tune
then the piper will lead us to reason.
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long and the forests
Will echo with laughter

If there’s a bustle in your hedge-row don’t be alarmed now
it’s just a spring clean for May-queen.
Yes there are two pats you can go by but in the long run
There’s still time to change the road you’re on.

And it makes me wonder.
Your head is humming and it won’t go
In case you don’t know
The Piper’s calling you to join them.

Dear lady
can you hear the wind blow
And did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows are taller than our soul

There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
how everything still turns to gold.

And if you listen very hard the tune will come to you at last.
When all are one and one is all to be a rock and not a roll.
And she’s buying a stairway to heaven.
