Rachel knelt down besides the unconscious young woman and opened
Cassie's eyelids and said, "Her pupils are dilated." She then felt
her pulse and said, "It's weak. Let's get her into bed." They couldn't
take her to the hospital or call for help because it was pouring and
was very windy. The ferry would be closed and the chopper couldn't
fly in windy conditions. Nick carried her into her room where he
gently placed her on the bed with Rachel following right behind.
Cassie's Room
Smoothing back Cassie's hair, Rachel touched Cassie's forehead
and said, "She's burning up. Nick get a wash cloth and wet it. We've got to
bring down her fever." He ran from her room to the bathroom where he
he wet the cloth and ran back to Cassie's room.Nick handed it to Rachel
who put the cloth on Cassie's forehead. She still wasn't coming
around. Rachel touched Cassie's cheek and said, "She's still
burning up, Nick. Go get ice from the freezer and put it in a Ziplock
bag." He ran out of her room down the stairs to the kitchen where he opened
the freezer and took out ice cubes and but them in plastic bag. Nick then
ran out of the kitchen up the grand staircase back to her room. He then
handed the bag of ice to Rachel who placed it under Cassie's blue shirt.
"Stay here with her. I'll be right back. Rachel said as she got up from
the edge of Cassie's bed.
After she left the room, Nick sat on the edge of Cassie's bed
and stroked her long hair as he said, "C'mon wake up, Cassie. I love
you...don't die on me. Please open up those gorgeous hazel eyes of yours."
Rachel returned with her black medical bag and examined Cassie.
"Her pressure is very low." She said. Then Rachel peered into Cassie's eyes
with the white penlight and said, "Her pupils are still dilated."
With fear in his voice he asked Rachel, "What's wrong with her?
Why isn't she waking up?"
"It could be the flu or a virual infection. I don't know why she
isn't waking up." She said to Nick.
