The Strays

Chapter 1: Bad news
Part 1
CLANG! The dustbin lid fell off with a crash.
“Hey, wake up! Clover! Come on, Clover! CLOVER!!!
“What’s wrong? Leave me alone, will you!”
“CLOVER!!! Out of there! This is important!”
“Alright, alright, I’m coming! What’s the fuss about?”
“Bad news. About Rainbow. Help me get the others.”
“RAINBOW??!! But Ben – ”
“Look, just help me.”
A small black cat appeared.
“What’s all the commotion? Some of us are trying to get some sleep in here!”

Ben and Clover were two very special dogs. They were special because they belonged to a very special club, with Cherry the budgie, Gingi the cat, Rusty the pony and the black cat, Tasha. The club was for ownerless animals. There was one very special girl who looked after all of them, named Jenny. She had a very special gift that only she knew about. This gift was that she could talk to animals. Her parents had died in a car crash, or so she was told.

“So what’s going on, Ben?” asked Clover anxiously.
“Do you want the bad news or the very bad news?”
“Bad.”
“Bonbon’s back from America. She saw Rainbow, and she’s sick, very sick. She needs us. Bonbon told me what’s wrong, and I know the cure. She needs Golddust’s Gold powder.”
“Rainbow? We’ve not seen her for ages!” the others exclaimed.
“Golddust’s powder? That must be serious! How long have we got?” asked Jenny.
“That’s the very bad news. Only about a week.”

Rainbow was a cockatoo, a friend of the strays. Bonbon was a ships cat, who Tasha had known since they were kittens. And finally, Golddust was a magical bird who lived on the Blue Mountains. The Blue Mountains was a secret place deep in the deepest forest, a place where only animals could go. No humans knew about this magical place, apart from Jenny of course.

“Okay, now that is bad news.”
“How are we supposed to travel all the way to the Blue Mountains, get the powder, then go to America, find Rainbow, which may prove to be difficult, and use the powder on her all in the space of one week?”
“It’s impossible!”
“Plus there’s the problem of getting there.
“And the fact that Jenny can’t even see the Blue Mountains.”
“Can’t we find some way of contacting Golddust so she can go to Rainbow herself?”
“Get real, Tasha! As if we could contact her in the Blue Mountains!”
“Well we can’t walk. It’s about a bazillion miles away!”
“Calm down, everyone!” Ben shouted over the babble of noise.
“One at a time. Firstly, Clover, I have no idea how we will make the journey successfully in time. And Cherry, I’ve arranged with Bonbon we join her on the boat to the Greenanara Jungle. That isn’t far from the Blue Mountains. And Gingi, Jenny will have to wait while we talk to Golddust. Sorry, Tash, you know it’s impossible to contact anyone in the Blue Mountains. Now, have I answered everyone’s questions?”
“What about you, Rusty? You’ve not said anything,” Jenny turned to face a quiet pony who looked deep in thought.
Rusty looked up at her. “I was thinking. See, we’ve not got any transport from Greenanara to America, right? Well, I’ve got this friend, and he lives on a farm. So he knows all about people, okay? Well he lives near Greenanara, and near to his farm, there’s this person-transport-machine thing, I think he called it a T-R-A-N or something. Anyway, some people take pets, so there’s an animal compartment we could go in. And, best of all, it leads right to America!”
“You mean a train! Oh, Rusty, that’s fantastic!” Jenny thought it was an amazing idea.
“So, Ben, when do we set off?”
“In about 3 hours.”
“Then we’ve got plenty of time!”
“I wouldn’t be so sure, Gingi. Cherry and me have to go to the rescue centre. We’ve got exciting news! There may be another stray joining us!”
Part 2
“Cool! Is it a boy or a girl?”
“What animal?”
“How old?
“What are they called?” Everyone was curious.
“She’s a dog called Sandy. Really friendly towards animals, not so sure about humans. She was okay with Jenny though, especially when they had a conversation started!”
“Right, then, we’ll get going!”

About an hour later Tasha and Cherry arrived back with a sandy-coloured dog. She looked a bit nervous, but after the other strays had greeted her she was fine.
“Hi, Sandy!”
“Hi, everyone. It’s nice to be part of the group.”
“Wow. A new member. I can remember when I joined. I was just a kitten. Jenny found me in the cold and brought me here.”
They were sitting in an old barn.
“I was the first,” Ben told them. “Jenny found me as a puppy. I barked and she talked to me, and we understood each other. That was when Jenny found she could talk to us. Then we decided to form a club. I had known Clover all my life, so he was first member. Then we found Ginji, like he said. Then Bonbon heard about our club and asked if we could take in Tasha.”
“We were from a rescue centre too, Sandy,” Rusty told of how he and Cherry had become members.
“So what are you guys doing?”
“Yes, that’s just what I was about to tell you,” Ben told Sandy all about Rainbow and the powder. “See, we’ve got this friend, a cockatoo, called Rainbow. Tasha’s friend, Bonbon, she’s a ship’s cat, and she’s just back from America. She saw Rainbow, and Rainbow’s sick. We’ve got this other friend…” Ben told about the journey they would have to make and about Golddust and the Blue Mountains.
“Right… so you’re saying,” Sandy slowly gave a recap of what Ben had just told her, “there’s a sick bird in America who we have to save using this magic powder that comes from another bird who lives in some magic place called… Blue Mountains?”
“That’s right. Bonbon’s taking us on her boat.”
“And when did you say it left?”
“3 o’clock!” cried Jenny. “Hurry! It’s precisely 3 o’clock now!”
Ben and the others jumped up.
“Let’s…pant…hope the…boat…pant…is late…pant…or that Jenny’s…watch…pant…is wrong!” Ben gasped as they ran at full speed towards the harbour. As they came closer Jenny yelled, “HURRY! I can see the boat! It’s leaving now! We might just catch it…”
The friends sped up, desperately trying to make it in time. They arrived at the harbour just as the boat left. Jenny could see Bonbon looking anxiously out, shouting to them…but it was too late. She tried to grab the edge, but it was too far out. The seven watched, dismayed, as the boat floated further and further away from them. They were all thinking the same thing: How would they help Rainbow now? They had missed the boat.
Part 3
Chapter 2: Stowaway
“What now?” Ben asked in despair. “We’ve missed the boat. How else can we make it?”
“Oh, no!”
“Are there any more boats?”
“No, that was the last one to Greenanara. None of the others come within 50 miles.”
“Hang on, you guys. Where’s Cherry?” Jenny had noticed that the fluttering of Cherry’s wings had stopped.
“She was here a second ago.”
“So where is she now?”
So where was Cherry?

She was, in fact, on her way to Greenanara. She had managed to fly out to the boat as it left the harbour. When she realised the others hadn’t made it, she had tried to go back, but the boat was too far out. She couldn’t find Bonbon anywhere, and was very frightened. She had to find somewhere to hide, out of the view of the passengers. She spotted a small room with an open door, and flew inside. There she settled down inside the cupboard.

About an hour later the door opened. There was a hiss. “Cherry? Are you there?”
“Bonbon!” Cherry flew out of the cupboard to greet her friend.
“Cherry! I saw you come on board, but there were too many people. Then I saw one of your feathers in the doorway, and guessed you were here.”
Suddenly, the friends heard someone come in.
“Hide!”
A woman walked into the room. “Hello? I thought I heard voices. Is there someone in here?”
“I never realised it was someone’s room!” whispered Cherry.
“Shh!”
But the woman had heard them. She walked over to the cupboard and opened it.
“Goodness! Bonbon! What on earth are you doing in my room? And who’s your friend?”
“She’s been on board a while,” hissed Bonbon.
“Well she seems nice,” Cherry said, a bit too loudly.
“Oh! Hello there. Thank you very much!”
“You – you understood me?” Cherry and Bonbon looked at her in surprise.
The woman laughed.
“But I thought it was only Jenny!”
The woman stopped laughing when Cherry said this. “Did you say – Jenny? You don’t mean – you can’t mean Jenny Turner?”
“The very one! Why, do you know her?”
“Know her? I know her all right – I’m her mother!”
“MOTHER??” Cherry and Bonbon said together.
“But her mother’s – her mother – but she –”
“Died? Yes, that’s probably what Jenny was told. Her father died in the crash. I almost didn’t make it. Her aunt was looking after her until I was out of hospital, but when I came back, she had run away. We couldn’t find her anywhere. You’ve got to take me to her!”
Cherry and Bonbon stared at the woman, open-mouthed.
“I’m afraid that isn’t possible right now,” said Cherry. “You see…”
She told the woman everything, from Jenny and Ben forming a club to the strays missing the boat.
“So you see, I’m on my own. Everyone else is back at the harbour. By the way, what’s your name? I’m Cherry.”
“Julie. Julie Turner. Oh, my… I never even knew Jenny could talk to you as well… Listen. I need to find Jenny. You can stay in my room, and Bonbon is welcome to visit. I’ll help you to find Jenny and the others when we get to Greenanara. I’ll help find this… Rainbow. I’m on your side.”
Part 4
“Do you think she could have… caught the boat?”
“But she wouldn’t… I mean… would she have caught it without us?”
“I didn’t think so either, Ben. But we’ll just have to assume she has. We’ve got to find Rainbow!”
Everyone was worried about Cherry. But they had to hurry.
“So how’d we get there?”
“You guys –” Sandy tried to make a suggestion, but Ben cut in.
“I vote we walk there. I know it’s a long way, but –”
“Honestly, Ben!” Clover had an idea. “Jenny should try to hitch us a lift.”
“Shut up and stop being stupid, Clover,” said Ben. “I mean, who’s going to give a kid and six animals a lift?”
“Well your idea was no better!”
“Look, you guys,” Jenny jumped in to stop the argument. “You’ve never disagreed before. Let’s not start now, OK? Especially when we’ve got so little time. Why not listen to Sandy’s suggestion?”
“Alright, Sandy, what do you think?”
“Well, you know how Rusty said about the train to America? Aren’t there other trains? I mean, if there’s a boat to Greenanara why couldn’t there be a train?”
“Sandy, you’re a genius! There is a train to Greenanara! And it’s right down the road from here. Let’s go!” The friends started walking towards the train station.

“1 ticket to Greenanara, please,” Jenny asked. “Oh, and how much for pets?”
“Greenanara, eh? Ooh, let’s see… that’s £5 for you… what animals you got?”
“2 cats, 3 dogs and a pony.”
“Cor! You sure are an animal person, missy. A pony, you say? How’d you think we can get a pony on the train? The rest are 50p each. £3.50 – that’s £8.50 altogether.”
“Oh – okay – but what about Rusty? I can’t leave him behind!”
“Well, I’ll tell you this, if you’re that desperate,” the man added quietly. “We got a horseman over there. If he’s not too busy, I’m sure he’d take your Rusty in his horsebox. For an extra charge of course.”
“Oh, thank you! That’s great! Yes – here’s the money – right. Thanks so much! Goodbye!”

Jenny walked over in the direction the man had pointed. She couldn’t see any horse! Oh, hang on, what was that shed? Yes, he would be in there. She knocked and walked in quietly. The man had his back to her and was grooming his horse.
“Excuse me? I was told that you had a horsebox. I – er – need you – I mean – if that’s okay with you – ”
“You want me to take your pony? Sure! What’s your name?”
The man turned to face her. Jenny could see he had black, bushy hair and an even bushier beard. He looked quite old, maybe in his forties. He seemed nice enough.
“By the way, my name’s John. Right, let’s see the pony.”
“He’s outside, with my other pets. Rusty won’t be any trouble, he’ll just stay quietly, so long as he’s got something to eat.”

“Right now. Yep, he should get into the box no problem. We’ll have to hook it up to the train, though, and that could take quite a while. When does your train leave?”
“Oh, not ’till 4:30. I’ve plenty of time – it’s only 3:15!”
“Good. Can you help me rig it up?”
“Sure!”
“Wait here.”
A few minutes later John came back.
“Right, the 4:30 train driver has got the train out on the outside tracks. That’s the one to Greenanara, right?”
“Yeah. What do you want me to do?”
“Over here. Right, now, I want you to get that hook – yes – that’s the one –”
John explained to Jenny what to do, and where to put everything. After an hour or so, the train was ready to leave, and a small group of passengers were waiting to board the train. “ – That’s the way, yes, there we go – now just push that in there – that’s it – and that’ll just slip in there – mmhm – good! That’s her. Now bring your horse in here – there we go!”
“Try to be good, Rusty,” whispered Jenny. “Bye!”
They closed the horsebox and everyone began to board the train. Jenny took the others to the pet’s compartment at the back. “Not too loud now, right guys? Good. See you.” She closed the door and went to find a seat.
