| Using Reiki on Children with Disabilities |
I have been a Regisered nurse for many years now and have found that including Reiki as part of my work with my pediatric patients has been the missing link to helping them get to another level of healing.
Reiki has the ability to energize the child's own healing ability on 4 levels spiritually, emotionally, physically and mentally, so much more can be accomplished when it is a daily part of the careplan. When working with a child that has physical or mental
disabilities there is usually a team of therapists and medical people involved in the child's care. The pediatrician and homecare nurses as well as physical, occupational and speech therapists work together to accomplish maximum growth and development for the child. My pediatric patients all receive Reiki and the children I work with require skilled nursing care in their homes.
Since I started including Reiki as part of my patient care, I have seen wonderful things happen for these children who were once considered maintenance cases or that their growth in many ways was considered not to promising. I am including some of these stories on this page to give hope to parents and family members that including Reiki as part of your child's growth and healing can work miracles. Some are small miracles others are huge miracles. Being grateful for them often turns into more.
*Abigail is my latest success story. A little girl with Spina Bifida who after 2 years of therapy,including Reiki, has had her tracheostomy and gastrostomy tubes removed is talking, eating, walking with a walker, going to school and now no longer needs nursing care at home. Her Mom never gave up hope that Abigail could do great things and it shows. It was so much fun watching this lovely little girl go from pretty much ragdoll like to a strong healthy child with much promise.
*Gunnar a 17 month old baby boy who was born 3 month's premature is my latest pediatric home care client. He was diagnosed with immature lung development, was on oxygen via a nasal cannula and was fed through a tube in his mouth to his stomach for 4 months while he was in the Neonatal intensive care unit. He also is dealing with a neurolgical impairment. I started caring for Gunnar when he came home at 4.5 months old (9/2008). He was still requiring oxygen via the nasal cannula and the outlook was questionable for him where his medical team was concerned. Knowing the benefits of Reiki I asked permission from the parents to channel Reiki to him and they said yes. Gunnar has received Reiki 1 to 2 times a week since september:
2/2009- he is now off supplemental oxygen during the day and is only on it prophylactically at nightime He is making attempts at walking which really has surprised the medical team and he is making strides each week.
3/2009- Gunnar is off oxygen and is breathing Room air. He is still monitored with the Pulse oximeter at all times with his Po2 level reading very good.He cannot sit up with out falling over so we will work with that as well as his speech and coodination.
7/2009 - Gunnar is sitting up on his own for a few minutes at a time and his upper body strength is getting better each week. He is such a joy and claps his hands when he is knows he has made a stride. He is drinking from a cup with help is turning from side to side and is pushing himself up using both arms.He stands up from a crouch postion and can hold himself in a crawl position for short periods, he does not actually crawl yet but we will continue to work on that. He is only monitored for his blood oxygen level( Pulse oximeter)at night and sporadically during the day, he is doing better each week. I will continue to work with Gunnar and will provide updates here. He is such a joy and will without a doubt grow and develope better than expected with the addition of Reiki to his treatment.
10/16/09- Gunnar continues to improve with attempts at making vowel and consonant sounds and he is able to hold himself up in a crawl position for 2-3 minutes with both arms equally strong which was not the case in the last update.He is off all supplemental oxygen and mechanical monitoring. He responds as any toddler would when he is wants his needs to be met and when Mom leaves to go to work there can be a separation period which is so spot on! His dexterity is improving and we are starting to teach him sign language so he can communicate by sign until his speech is developed. Gunnar is loving life and we are loving him! Reiki has been a big part of bringing all his functions together and the results are wonderful. Mom and Dad are so great and the unconditional love they give is a big part of Gunnar's growth.
*Caitlin was one of my first pediatric home care cases. A little 5 year old girl with Glutaric acidemia. Her body actually reacted badly to her own proteins so we had to give her protein subsitutes via a gastrostomy tube. She was 5 years old and weighed only 22 pounds when I started with her care. When I first met Caitlin I suspected she was having focal seizures when I assessed her, but, because of extreme continuous spasms of her whole body her primary care nurse said it was just part of her disease. Her Mom was a wonderful advocate for her and gave me permission to channel Reiki to Caitlin. Two days after her first treatment Caitlin had a grand mal seizure in front of her mother who immediately called 911. Caitlin was taken to a nearby hospitol, diagnosed with an underlying seizure disorder and was placed on appropriate medication. She started growing calmer with the continued Reiki and being on appropriate seizure medication. After one year of taking care of Caitlin she had doubled her weight, was a smiling happy little girl and was so different from the spasmodic, physically and spiritually distressed child I had first met. There are times when Reiki in its healing path will bring a physical or emotional healing reaction which can help the patient to heal even further which is what happened in Caitlin's case.
Being a pediatric nurse it never ceases to amaze me how the parents of disabled children are such fabulous advocates for their kids. Keep up the good work always for miracles happen all the time!
