DOOM is a three dimensional, virtual reality type action game
created by id Software. In some ways, it is similar to Wolfenstein 3-D
(id Software, Apogee).
In DOOM, you're a space marine, one of Earth's toughest, hardened in
combat and trained for action. Three years ago you assaulted a superior
officer for ordering his soldiers to fire upon civilians. He and his body
cast were shipped to Pearl Harbor, while you were transferred to Mars, home
of the Union Aerospace Corporation.
The UAC is a multi-planetary conglomerate with radioactive waste
facilities on Mars and its two moons, Phobos and Deimos. With no action for
fifty million miles, your day consisted of suckin' dust and watchin'
restricted flicks in the rec room.
For the last four years the military, UAC's biggest supplier, has
used the remote facilities on Phobos and Deimos to conduct various
secret projects, including research on inter-dimensional space travel.
So far they have been able to open gateways between Phobos and Deimos,
throwing a few gadgets into one and watching them come out the other.
Recently however, the gateways have grown dangerously unstable.
Military "volunteers" entering them have either disappeared or been
stricken with a strange form of insanity--babbling vulgarities,
bludgeoning anything that breathes, and finally suffering an untimely
death of full-body explosion. Matching heads with torsos to send home
to the folks became a full-time job. Latest military reports state
that the research is suffering a small setback, but everything is
under control.
A few hours ago, Mars received a garbled message from Phobos. "We
require immediate military support. Something fraggin' evil is coming
out of the gateways! Computer systems have gone berserk!" The rest
was incoherent. Soon afterwards, Deimos simply vanished from the sky.
Since then, attempts to establish contact with either moon have been
unsuccessful.
You and your buddies, the only combat troop for fifty million miles
were sent up pronto to Phobos. You were ordered to secure the perimeter of
the base while the rest of the team went inside. For several hours, your
radio picked up the sounds of combat: guns firing, men yelling orders,
screams, bones cracking, then finally silence. Seems your buddies are dead.
Things aren't looking too good. You'll never navigate off the
planet on your own. Plus, all the heavy weapons have been taken by
the assault team leaving you only with a pistol. If only you could get your
hands around a plasma rifle or even a shotgun you could take a few down on
your way out. Whatever killed your buddies deserves a couple of pellets in
the forehead. Securing your helmet, you exit the landing pod. Hopefully you
can find more substantial firepower somewhere within the station. As you
walk through the main entrance of the base, you hear animal-like growls
echoing throughout the distant corridors. They know you're here. There's no
turning back now.
Doom 95 Review:
Over the last 2 years Doom has become the standard for 3D games. If a new 3D game is released many people's first question will be "Is it better than Doom?" Doom has enjoyed tremendous success; it is been ported to practically every system known to man. Even the Macintosh
Doom however, was never ported to Windows '95; until now. You may say "who cares?"; it's still Doom. Yes it is still Doom, but it does have a few enhancements. Besides, it is the perfect way to convert a Windows 3.1 user over to Windows '95. "Hey look, I can play Doom under Windows '95 just as good as you can play it under DOS. Check this out: SVGA graphics, and watch; I can download in the background too."
Installation:
Installing Doom '95 was a snap. Once everything is decompressed there is a setup program. Some drivers are installed then the system reboots and you are ready to go.
Graphics:
Doom '95 supports 4 graphic modes. They are 320x200, 320x240, 640x400, and 640x480. I was a little disappointed that they didn't support 320x400. On my machine the first two modes were extremely fast and the last two modes were pretty slow. 320X400 would have been a happy medium. Using Doom95 -devparm I was able to capture the frame rates for each mode.
Video Mode Frames Per Second (FPS)
320x200 (VGA) 15-22
320x240 (Extended VGA?) 15-20
640x400 (SVGA) 6-7
640x480 (SVGA) 5.0-5.2
I would guess these numbers would be much higher once I upgrade my PC to a local bus video card. Doom '95 at 640x400 runs about the speed of normal Doom on a 486/25. Doom at 640x480 runs at a 386/40 speed.
When Doom '95 is played at SVGA it looks very sharp and crisp. Monsters can be easily defined from across the screen. Corners look sharper and the walls look less pixilized. Using a screen capture program and Paint Shop Pro I was able to capture screen shots of both VGA and SVGA for comparison. The detail cannot be seen very will in the thumbnails but seen full screen the SVGA looks much better.
Sound:
It may be my imagination but the Doom '95 sound is much better than the normal Doom. The sound effects seem richer; more alive. This may be due to the support of more channels. When a room full of guys is entered I can hear were they all are. It would probably sound even better if I had a SB-16. The music is also a little better. It has been re-done in midi format. It would probably sound much better on a wave table sound card.
Gameplay
Doom '95 plays exactly like the original Doom. As far as I can tell there are no differences what so ever. Mouse and Joystick control is also supported.
Overall
Sure, Doom isn't anything new but it does show that Windows '95 can be a good gaming environment. Once a standard set of drivers is released game developers will be able to make games in less time. If all the new games run exclusivly under Windows '95 they will only get faster and faster. If a DOS game that has been ported to Windows '95 runs the same speed as it did in DOS than a native Windows '95 game should run even better. The future for PC gaming looks bright indeed.
Doom 64 Cheats:
Features menu
Enter "?TJL BDFW BFGV JVVB" as a password. Then the game will begin on level one. Now pause the game to access a new "Features" menu that allows level selection, invulnerability, map mode, health boost, and weapons/ammunition. You can also access the "warp to fun" levels 25, 26, and 27. Once enabled, the health boost and weapons/ammunition options may not be disabled. The invulnerability option will be disabled on level 32. Once enabled, the features menu will appear when any saved game is paused until the Nintendo 64 is powered off or reset.
Destroy all the barrels on Level 1 to access Level 32. The warp is in a secret room behind the starting location of the level. Save the first barrel to be destroyed last.
Super status
Enter "W93M 7H20 BCY0 PSVB" as a password. Now the game will begin on the last level with 100 health, 200 armor, all weapons, full ammunitions, the backpack, and levels 29 to 31 completed. The inventory will contain three pentagram items that power-up the laser to be three times as powerful as the BFG9000 and activate the three switches in the last level to close the gates that spawn the monsters.
Level 32 (Hectic) demo
Enter "RVNH 3CT1 CD3M 0???" as a password. Now a demo of level 32 will appear as the fourth demonstration sequence.
Secret levels for special keys
Level 4 has a secret entrance to level 29.
Level 12 has a secret entrance to level 30.
Level 18 has a secret entrance to level 31.
Death messages
After losing a life, do not immediately resume the game. Wait a few seconds and random messages will appear at the top of the screen for several seconds at one minute intervals.

Enter all selections identically to Playstation 1 and begin playing.
The game will hang from time to time. At these points, swap the disc to the other Playstation after waiting a few seconds before removing the disc.
