"An exercise in rhythmic seduction taking you to the dizzying heights on the wings of Abstract's imaginative inflections. Onward, elevation!" - RAP PAGES
"One of the strongest voices coming out this year" - URB
"'We seem to love / We seem to have some sort of pride / For originality / Reality on the Left Hand Side' - the Left Hand side means the artists that are on the other side of the field, that don't just go with the mainstream flow of commerciality. We have pride and we're out here day to day representing this left-sided new style of hip-hop and rhyming culture. Trying to keep our originality. At the same time, it's reality. People wanna do gangsta rap and say it's real. What we're doing is realistic too. "My Experience" is telling the world about what we're all going through and within that how much pride we have in what we do." - Abstract Rude
As part of Big Dada's continuing representation of the multifacted innovations of underground hip-hop as a worldwide phenomenon, their latest release comes from Los Angeles, California. Abstract Rude is a dread-headed, chocolate-voiced spiritual b-boy who performs with Tribe Unique, a group of dancers, and who is part of the Mass Men collective - reconfiguring South Central as utopia instead of dystopia. "My Experience is..." is Ab's first British release - a place where there should be a receptive audience for his intelligent, complex, yet soulful take on hip hop.
Abstract Rude's break came at the Good Life (a long running open mic session that kick-started the LA underground scene and spwaned the talents of the Pharcyde) but by 1993 it had served it's purpose so Abstract Rude and Aceyalone (of the Freestyle Fellowship) started a new night called Project Blowed, the same as the title given to the compilation album documenting the talents of the scene that they had just put together.
The club still runs, going from strength to strength every Thursday night. While the media's attention may have drifted away to other scenes and the major labels struggle to understand what's going on, down round Lelmert Park in LA (the club's location), people know the score. "It's becoming history," says Ab, "it's a real renaissance."
That's what you get in this dread's music - a synthesis of the strengths and traditions of the Los Angeles Underground. Intelligence, raw beauty and soul - where 'soul' means genuine inner expression and individuality, not formulaic harmonies. "I still maintain my sanity and my sense of who I am and my struggle continues. For me that's what my hair represents - my struggle. My struggle to stay on my right path."
