School dances used to be fun for us to do. Recently, however, they have become the most difficult type of event. Our biggest challenge is with the music itself. The most popular style of music is Hip-Hop, which typically contains suggestive lyrics. The music that we receive through our subscription service is edited for profanity, but not content, so there are many hot songs that we cannot play, which causes a very negative reaction from students. The second challenge comes from trying to provide some music variety. While the vast majority of students want the Hip-Hop, there are smaller segments that want Rock, Country, music from the 80s/90s, etc. When we try to cater to the smaller segments, there is a very negative reaction from the Hip-Hop Majority. Finally, theres the dancing itself. The MTV/BET generation sees nothing wrong with the close-contact style of dancing called Freak Dancing; however, school faculty and parents find this highly objectionable. This causes a very negative reaction from faculty, who tell us to change the music when this type of dancing takes place, which causes a very negative reaction from the students.
It seems that everything we do at school dances causes very negative reactions. Since we strive for positive reactions in our business, we have come to the conclusion that school dances arent for us. We still do private youth parties, like graduations and Birthday Parties, because we dont have the same pressures as school dances.
