1.0 INTRODUCTION : Foam concrete is a lighthweight building material combining good mechanical strength with low thermal conductivity and ease of working. It is a low density hardened Portland cement paste or mortar, containing a large number of small bubbles of air which gives a fine cellular structure. In recent years it has been used in certain parts of Europe, Asia, America and Africa to reduce the weight and insulating properties of precast concrete building units.
2.0 THE MATERIALS : Foam concrete is a mixture of cement, fine sand, water and a special foam, which produce a strong, lightweight concrete containing millions of evenly distributed, consistently sized air bubbles or cells. The density of foam concrete is determined by the amount of foam added to the basic cement, sand and the water mixed.
Foam concrete is fire resistant and does not absorb much water, has high noise and thermal insulation properties and can be sawn, nailed and drilled using conventional tools.
3.0 METHOD OF MANUFACTURING : Foam concrete is foamed by entrapping small bubbles of air in Portland cement paste or mortar by mechanical process where a stiff, prefoamed foam is mixed in a base mortar in a suitable drum mixer. The entrapped air bubbles intruduced by the incorporation of the foam into the base mix increase the volume and thereby reduces the density of the concrete or mortar. The bubbles generally between 0.3 and 0.8 mm in diameter produced a strong plasticizing effect and also effectively eliminate the risk of segregation and bleeding. With careful mix design and material batching a range of foam concrete and be produced which are free flowing and need no compaction at all.
4.0 ADVANTAGES : Foam concrete is one of the few materials available having good mechanical strength combined with lightweight and low thermal conducvity. It can be produced in a wide range of densities and properties which can vary to suit particular
requirements. Like ordinary concrete, it can easily be mould to any desired shape or sizes. It's surface texture makes it a good sound absorbent and provides a good mechanical bond for stucco and plaster.
FOAM CONCRETE OFFERS MANY OTHER BENEFITS : Reduces the dead load of a structure. It can be manufactured to precise specifications of strength and densities. Needs minimum handling.
It eliminate transport cost since it can be cast at site insitu.
Has excellent workability. Can be nail, planed, drilled and sawn. Provides excellent insulation against heat / cold and sound. Will take all traditional surface finishs - paint, tiles, bituminous membrane, carpets etc, etc. Is vermin and rot proof. Is resistant to moisture. Is fire resistant.
The properties of SBT foam concrete are such that it has a wide field of use.
The use of foam concrete can be seen from these examples :
; in lightweight insulating bricks, blocks, roof tiles, etc.
; in building panels and partition walls of various dimensions either precast or poured on site.
; in all type of insulation work, including cavity walls.
; in ceiling panels.
; in sound proofing application.
; in precast commercial, industrial and domestic building panels, both internal and external.
; in precast / insitu exterior wall facades for all sizes of buildings.
; in panels and sub-surface for stable, to reduce humidity and dampnessnd to stabilise temperatures.
; in sub-surface for sport arenas, e.g. tennis courts.
; in infill sections between beams of suspended floors.
; in cast insitu whole unit of house.
Yours faithfully.
