| AMERICANISM |
The Americanism work of the Auxiliary includes all activities tending to perpetuate American ideals and to uphold the principles of American democracy. Americanism work is largely educational in character and is usually divided into three phases: work with the youth, the adult, and the community. All matters pertaining to the flag or patrotic education are rightly classified as Americanism activities. Since Sept.11,2001 things have changed all over the world. None more so than right here in America. We are asking everyone in the United States to please show your patriotism and fly your American Flag. Not only at Home, but, your place of employment, your vehicle, on your desk at work or home office. This is a time when we must unite and be strong. Keep our prayers in our hearts for all our service personnel serving to keep us Free.
PATROTIC EDUCATION: Every citizen should have a thorough knowledge & understanding of the Constitution of the United States. Therefore, the Auxiliary has a very definite objective in emphasizing through its Americanism activities.
FIVE-POINT PROGRAM: Active Americanism in the home, in the Unit, youth groups, adult groups and in our community.
SPIRIT of YOUTH FUND: This fund was established by the American Legion Auxiliary to support programs for young people.
AUXILIARY EMERGENCY FUND: In 1970, funded by memorial gifts from Units, a loan from Auxiliary funds, and an inheritance to the Auxiliary from a former member, the Auxiliary Emergency Fund was established. This fund, which provides emergency assistance to a member for a limited period of time, provided she has been a member of the Auxiliary for the immediate past five consecutive years and has her current year's dues paid, is supported by contributions from Auxiliary Units and members.
CALVACADE OF MEMORIES: Each Unit is encouraged to collect memorabilia and organize a museum.
For information on these and all other Americanism programs provided by the American Legion Auxiliary, please drop an e-mail in the box below. We look forward to hearing from you. |
| CHILDREN & YOUTH |
The purposes and principles of the American Legion Auxiliary's Children & Youth Program are in general the same as those of the American Legion. The Auxiliary augments and adds to it through its continuing support of the overall program as well as through the sponsorship of special assignments and activities.
GIRLS STATE: This program is open to Junior High school girls, who wish to learn about the workings of the government. Girls State covers all forms of Government beginning with the local level, state level and onto the Federal level. This is open to all girls who are a junior. We are hoping for a full house this June. I encourage all junior girls to take an active part in your government and political affairs. The power of one can be all it takes to make a difference in the world. You just might be that one.
If you are interested in obtaining further information on Girls State, please drop an e-mail in the box below.
THE AMERICAN LEGION CHILD WELFARE FOUNDATION: It is the hope of the founders of this Foundation that, through it, funds may become available to finance research, special projects, demonstrations, and public education regarding children and youth over and above the existing program.
Please drop an e-mail in the box below to learn more about these and any other services provided by The American Legion Auxiliary. Unit 54 is very active in the Gunnison community. |
| COMMUNITY SERVICE |
This year the theme for the year is There is magic in America's Dreams. We will be working the community to help those in need and make their deams become a reality. Some of the main focus this year for the community service programs will be Organ Donation and Habitat for Humanity. Approximately 75,000 people are waiting to be transplanted with one or another organ at any given minute. These people could very well be our own neighbor, friends or loved ones. Many are children. If you are an Auxiliary member and you are willing to participate, then you should let your family be aware of your desire to become an organ donor. We will be spreading the word in our community about the importance of organ donation.
Habitat for Humanity helps fill affordable housing needs for many families worldwide. The recipients are selected on a basis of need without regard to race or religion. Houses are built in the local neighborhoods with the help of the homeowner and numerous volunteers. ALA members can support this organization through volunteering time, materials or financial contributions.
Make a Difference Day on Saturday Oct. 27, 2001. This is a national day of doing good deeds for your neighbors.
Blood Donor Program is being promoted. December is National Volunteer Blood Donor Month. Blood is needed everyday.
Cancer Awareness: Almost every family has been touched by cancer in some form. We will be bringing more awareness to our community.
Working together we all can make those Magical Dreams a reality for someone and the rewards to ourselves are truly magical. |
| VETERANS AFFAIRS & REHABILITATION |
The ALA Unit 54 is active in V A & R programs. We voice our opinions on legislative issues concerning our Veterans, and we work close with many other organizations and programs that gives direct service to the veterans. Our Home Service program consist of our members sewing, knitting, cooking, shopping for materials and supplies and other services in the community for our many veterans who are not able to do these chores themselves.
The National Creative Arts Festival will be promoted again this year. This program gives us the opportunity to work with the veterans and help make their dreams a reality. The 14th annual Festival will be held October 14-21, 2001 in Prescott, Arizona. |
