| Depending on your qualifications and willingness to work hard, you may aspire to become a ship's captain, marine engineer, electrical engineer, or a chief steward. There are two major training institutions - Maritime Academy Malaysia (or Akademi Laut Malaysia) in Melaka and Ungku Omar Polytechnic in Perak. You could be sent to one of them. Training is based on the "Sandwich System" which means training alternates between the classroom and the high seas. On board a ship there are three work areas: the deck, engine room, and galley (kitchen).
