| THE MARITIME ACADEMY OF MALAYSIA By Muhammad Ahsan The Maritime Academy Malaysia (better known by its Bahasa Malaysia acronym as ALAM) is Malaysia's premier maritime education and training institution. Located in lush green and serene Malaysian country side, overlooking the busy Straits of Melaka, the Academy has a well developed 24 hectare campus. The Academy lies 148 kilometers south of the capital city of Kuala Lumpur and 152 kilometers north of Singapore. Road connections from both cities are excellent. The Academy is unique in that it is a comprehensive one stop educational and training center, where all courses leading to professional maritime qualifications, together with ancillary safety and management programs, are provided under one roof. The objective of the Academy is to provide courses and programs of the highest quality which not only meet but also exceed the national and international requirements. The Academy has a teaching staff of locals and expatriates with wide and extensive maritime experience as well as high academic qualifications. Their work is supported by teams of visiting lecturers and professionals from the industry, both local and from abroad. This expertise enables ALAM to offer a wide range of specialized courses to complement and meet the needs of the dynamic maritime industry. The Academy has strong links with universities and training institutions in Canada, Australia, Europe, United States, South America, and Asia. These global networks and strategic alliance project the Acedemy as an international player and a major contributor to the maritime education and training world. BACKGROUND: The Maritime Academy Malaysia, located on a picturesque site overlooking the straits of Melaka is the premier maritime education and training institution in Malaysia. First established in 1977 as a training centre, it was upgraded in 1981 to an Academy with the award of a Government Charter. The primary role of the Academy is to develop and enhance the knowledge and skills of maritime personnel engaged in and associated with the merchant navy as well as its related industries. Recently designated as a branch of the World Maritime University, it is fast becoming a leading institution in the regiion. Besides having a formal link with established maritime education and training institutions in Australia and Cnada, the Academy is also a Founder member of the ASEAN Association of Maritime Education and Training Institutions. The Academy is unique in that it provides a comprehensive range of maritime education and training under one umbralla. Courses currently offered include professional maritime and shipping courses and a wide range of specialised safety courses. The Academy is supported by a core of highly qualified and teaching staff. FACILITIES: Comprehensive and modern training facilities are provided includind a state-of-the-art Navigation Simulator, Computer Laboratory and VTS trainer. Constant review and upgrading of facilities is undertaken to keep in step with technological changes in the industry. A team of highly qualified, experienced and dedicated teaching faculty members cater to the educational needs of the students. Comfortable accomodation (studio flatlets) and full victualling facilities are availble on campus. Courses can be offered on a fully residential basis. For leisure, a wide range of recreational and sports facilities including sailing, canoeing and wind surfing are provided. COURCES: A full range of maritime related courses are offered. These include : a) Pre-Sea (Cadets/Ratings) b) Certificates of Competency courses up to Master Foreing Going (Class 1), 1st Class Marine Engineer (Steam/Motor) and Marine Radio officer. c) Safety Modular courses (including Firefighting, Sea Survival, First Aid, ARPA, Radar Simulator, Ship Captain's Medical and Shipboard Management), d) Specialised Modular Courses (e.g, Chemical Tanker Advanced Operation, Inert Gas and Crude Oil Washing, etc), e) Safety courses for the Offshore industry. f) Specially tailored courses for the maritim and other industries. g) Hotel, catering and safety training packages for the cruise industry.
