Name: Son Gokou (aka Goku/Kakarott)
Goku is the main character in the Dragon Ball Z series. He is a Saiyan warrior, son of Bardock. He was born in the year 737 on planet Vegita but was raised on Earth and married a human named Chi-chi. Raditz is his brother and he has two sons, Gohan and Goten. Goku dies twice in the Dragon Ball Z series, the first time is by Piccolo and the second is when he trys to teleport Cell. He later is able to fuse with Vegita to form Gojita.

Name: Son Gohan
First son of Goku. Born and raised on Earth in the year 757. He is trained by Piccolo and is scared at first to use his powers but soon finds out that he has immense power within him and becomes a valuable fighter in around the middle of the Freiza Saga.

Name: Son Goten
Goku's second child born on Earth in the year 767. He is very strong and is able to go super saiyan earlier than anyone else ever did (around age 7). Although he is young he is always ready for a fight and can never seem to get a good opponent untill Majin Buu.

Name: Vegita (aka Prince of Saiyans)
Son of King Vegita, born in 732 on planet Vegita. Starts out to be Goku's rival and stays that way untill the middle of the Freiza Saga when he dies by Freiza's hand. He later marries Bulma and has two children, Trunks and Bra. Vegita can fuse with Goku with magic earrings to make Gojita and does so in movie 12.

Goku and Vegita fused together with help from the magic earrings.

Name: Trunks
Born in 766 he is Vegita's first child. He comes from the future to give Goku heart medicine he needs to live because he would eventually pick up a disease and die. He goes back to his time to train then comes back three years later and kills androids 17 and 18. He can also fuse with Goten to make Gotenks.

Name: Bra
Vegita and Bulma's Second child born in 778 on Earth. She loves her dad, she tends to stick with her mom most of the time and is never forced to fight.

Name: Gotenks
The outcome of a fusion between Goten and Trunks.

Name: Piccolo
First person to kill Goku when he decided to sacrafice himself to kill Raditz. He is a Namek and plays a pretty big role in the anime. He fuses with Nail to fight in the Freiza Saga and later fuses with Kami.

Name: Raditz
Goku's older brother. He is a Saiyan that was trying to force Goku to help him and the other Saiyans destroy planets and kill people but when fighting Goku and Piccolo he dies.

Name: Kami
Son of Katatsu, born in 250 on the planet Namek. He was sent to Earth in fear of Namek being destroyed. He soon felt the urge to be god and so he trained under the current god and took the throne in 431. He later fuses with Piccolo later in the anime. They become one of the most powerfull fighters.

Name: Kuririn (aka Krillin)
Goku's best friend. He is a monk from Earth. Hes not bald but shaves his head because he doesnt want an enemy pulling it in battle and the six dots are scars burned into him.

Name: Freiza
A super villian who destroyed planet Vegita and most of the Saiyan race. He kills Vegita and Krillian before getting killed himself by Trunks.He also destroys planet Namek.

Name: Captain Ginyu
Leader of the Ginyu Force hired by Freiza to find and guard the dragon balls. He is the only one of five to survive, although, he switches bodies with Goku then with a frog by accident. He later switches bodies with Bulma for a bit but goes back to the frog and stays there.

Name: Baata
The tall blue member of the Ginyu Force, known for his super speed. Goku knocks him out and Vegita kills him on planet Namek.

Name: Rikuumu
The big, oaphy looking member of the Ginyu Force. He is knocked out in one hit from Goku and is finished off by vegita.

Name: Jiisu
The orange looking member of the Ginyu Force. He warns Captain Ginyu of Goku before he is killed.

Name: Gurudo
The smallest and least powerfull member of the Ginyu Force. He is the one that looks like a frog. He is the first member to die.

Name: Master Roshi
First person to train Goku. Used to be known as the most powerfull man in the world after his master died.

Name: Bulma
Technical genieus, busy body, worry wort, nag...oh yeah, wife to Vegita and mother to Trunks and Bra. She gets turned into a frog by Captain Ginyu (while a frog) but returns to her normal body soon afterwards. Invented the dragon ball scanner and a few other usefull things.

Name: Chichi
Goku's human wife. Mother of Gohan and Goten. Worries a lot from Earth for her husband and children while looking through Uranai Baba's crystal ball.

Name: King Kai
Second person to train Goku. He lives on his own little planet with his grasshopper friend Gregory who he uses as a final test. He also has great telepathy and ESP powers which he uses to know whats going on with Goku and crew.

Name: Tien
Not much I can say about these last two characters. They don't play much of a part in the show. Tien is a human with three eyes. He dies while fighting Nappa with Piccolo.

Name: Choutzu
Another small character (in more ways than one). He is a very small mime looking character. He is all white with red circles on his cheeks and he sticks with Tien all the time. He sacrifices himself in an attampt to kill Napa but turns out ineffective.
