The Aguman Capampangan of the Northwest
is based in Portland, Oregon. Its members
are Pampangans or Pampanguenos, one of the
eight major ethno-linguistic groups in the
Philippines and who live in the area around
the former Clark Air Base, chiefly, in the
highly progressive provinces of Pampanga and
Tarlac. (For the population of Pampanga, see:
http://www.census.gov.ph/data/sectordata/prov54.html
They are also called in their own language and
by other Filipinos as Capampangans (also spelled
Kapampangan). Kapampangans speak Kapampangan - a
language which the American colonists at first
mistook for just a dialect. Kapampangan is not
just a dialect though, but a language. It is as
different from other Philippine languages as
Spanish is to French and Italian. To see a
sample of the language, go to a webpage of their
dictionary which is on:
http://www.angelfire.com/ab/turla/index.html
The dictionary is also now published in bookform,
and it can be ordered for $19.99 + $4.00 postage
and handling.

Going back to the Aguman, it was founded by
Ernie Turla aided by his close associates,
Bienvenido Susi and Art Villanueva on June 29,
1996 when they had a picnic at Oaks Park in
Portland. Despite its being new, it has already
been able to accomplish what only a few Filipino
organizations in the whole world have been able
to. The medical mission it sent to the Philippines
in December 1998 distinguishes it from other
organizations in that it works for a divine and
humanitarian cause rather than just being
self-serving and just centered around social life
as so many Filipino clubs around the U.S. are.
In that aforementioned mission, a group of officers
led by Rudy Alejandrino brought with them to the
Philippines $64 thousand worth of antibiotics and
other medical supply procured from World Medical
Relief Inc. headed then by their compatriot , George
Samson. They paid for their own airline fare and
followed it through in three puericulture centers
located in Bacolor, Magalang and San Fernando - all
in the lahar-devastated area of their province,
Pampanga. No wonder it caught the imagination of all
Filipino communities in the Portland area and of all
Kapampangan communities all over the U.S.! The
president, Dan del Rosario, who has worked hard to
get a 503-c status for the non-profit organization,
is seeing another silver lining for a possible mission
this year 2000. Let's just see and keep our fingers
crossed while being optimistic. The odds
are in our favor though, because of the overwhelming
enthusiasm and abiding faith of the members of our
inner circle who would never, never let the Aguman
fall! In other words, the strength of this
association rests upon the heart of its own membership.
As the sayings go, "In union, there is strength" and
"Where there is a will, there is a way!"
Biba Capampangan!

Update (Jan.16, 2001):
The Aguman sent a successful medical mission to the
Philippines on December 11, 2000. It sent a delegation
that brought with it medicine to the towns of Angeles,
San Fernando, Lubao, Guagua, Sta. Rita, Masantol, and
Magalang (all in Pampanga), Concepcion and Tarlac City
(in Tarlac) and Aringay (in La Union). For a website
that tells a detailed story of their mission, click:

Philippine National Inquirer (newspaper)

This is the flag of our country, the Philippines.
It is red, white and blue. The red stands for courage,
the white for peace and the blue for justice. The three
stars stand for the three groups of islands there, viz.:
Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. The eight rays of the sun
stand for the first provinces to join the revolution
against Spain, viz.: Tarlac, Pampanga, Nueva Ecija,
Bulacan, Manila, Batangas, Laguna and Cavite. They could
also represent the eight major ethno-linguistic groups
among Filipinos, viz.: Ilocano, Pangasinan, Kapampangan,
Tagalog, Bicol, Waray-waray, Hiligaynon and Cebuano.
