ANVIL #4 (8/10) $6.66
c/o Independent Media International; 731 Heatherstone Dr.; High Ridge, MO 63049 USA
www.anvilmagazine.com anvilmag@charter.net
The self-proclaimed "unholy bible of extreme metal" is not lacking in flaws, but it's still off to a decent start. Professional printing, a color cover, a news page, plenty of ads and over 30 pages of reviews. My only qualms were the interviews came with graphics that seemed too large for the text; the gratuitous use of graphics worked much better for the music reviews. Anvil is run by two publshers who go by the names Skull Crusher and Maggot Eater and handle all the writing with the more modestly named Gabriel C. Zolman. I have to give this mag the props when the printing and layout is done by only three people. The bands chosen for interviews range from death metal to black metal to retro-thrash, et cetera. Slayer (USA), Entombed (Sweden), Malevolent Creation (USA), Vader (Poland), Pig Destroyer (USA), 3 Inches of Blood (Canada), Dead To Fall (USA), Phasm (France), Razorback Records (USA) and The Amenta (Australia) among others get to discuss with Skull, Maggot, Gabriel and us what they've been up to of late. Worth a look or two. - Dave Wolff

BRAVE WORDS AND BLOODY KNUCKLES #84 (10/10) $7.99
368 Yonge St.; Toronto ON; Canada M5B 1S5
www.bravewords.com bwbk@inforamp.net
Felix Laflamme's (www.felixlaflamme.org) cartoon likeness of Cradle of Filth's Dani Filth should've made the front cover of this issue judging by how closely it resembles Dani's picture. Perhaps a likeness of Dave Mustaine should have been added somewhere as well, based on the photo that ran with his interview. Not that the photography in this issue needs revision in any way, it's that Laflamme's piece struck me as something there should be more of here. The Cradle of Filth interview offers some interesting information that Glenn Danzig was considered to sing on Cradle's cover of Samhain's "Halloween II" (also recorded by the Misfits) for inclusion on a special edition release of Nyphetamine, but the plan fell through after Danzig "moved the comma in his payment the wrong way" according to Dani. Mustaine's interview was based on ex-King Diamond/Eidolon guitarist Glen Drover hooking up with Megadeth in place of Annihilator's Jeff Waters who was being considered for the spot. Glen Danzig is likewise interviewed here, as are Slayer, Fenriz of Darkthrone, Children of Bodom, Mastodon, Chris Caffery, Lilitu, Amon Amarth and Metal Church. BW&BN comes with a compilation CD featuring a number of bands including The Haunted, Cataract, Shadows Fall, Buried Inside and Agathodaimon. - Dave Wolff

CINEMA SEWER #15 (8/10) $4.00
320-440 E. 5th Ave.; Vancouver, B.C.; V5T IN5 Canada
www.cinemasewer.com mindseve100@hotmail.com
Cinema Sewer is an 18-and-over-only zine/comic edited by a Robin Bougie and dedicated to trash cinema with a bit of porn added for good measure. The layout is all handwritten text with a variety of drawings and photos as illustrations. Issue 15's first feature is a 4 1/2 page article on women's roller derby/exploitation films of the early to mid 70s. Kansas City Bomber, the 1972 movie with Raquel Welch, and the "Angels on Wheels" episode of Charlie's Angels are some of the examples of the public's love for watching females partake in violent sporting events. Norman Jewison's 1975 film Rollerball is mentioned in this article, though I personally don't consider this part of the exploitation genre as much as a science fiction author's allegory on warfare and rival governments. Perhaps this makes it exploitation of another sort After this is an article on The Love God, a 1969 social satire with Don Knotts, and an interview with Bo Vibenius who wrote and directed They Call Her One Eye, reportedly the first film to be banned in Sweden. Swedish actress Christina Lindberg as Frigga/Madeleine, a kind of female forerunner to Snake Plissken who reappeared in 2000's Sex, Logner & Videovald. Other topics for discussion are 1973's Sweet Sugar, a Phoenix moviehouse called the Westdale 4, the adult comic Ramba and porn star Seka. The humorous stories Pastor Gas and Beware the Bougieman are also worth a look. - Dave Wolff

ENDEMONIADA #20 (9/10)
www.endemoniada666.com EndemoniadaZine@aol.com
Alas, the new issue of the legendary New York zine known as Endemoniada is to be the last one as Lucifera plans to channel her energies into the various branches of New York Death Metal. With so many zines having seen its last days in the past couple years I would've liked to see one continue that had no compunctions about taking chances by telling people there were women in the metal scene that were in fact into it for the music, not to "look good" dressing up for a show or meeting the boys in the band. You may remember this zine was mentioned in an article on the metal scene the Village Voice ran back in the 90s. I imagine the women's chapter of NYDM will continue as Endemoniada had back then. Endemoniada also helped fuel my interest in Norwegian and Swedish black metal when I discovered it so that's another reason it saddens me that it's folding. The bands featured here include Yonkers death metallers Malignancy, Invidia, Iris of the Monday Night Mayhem radio program, Metallikate of Ruffage Radio and Sugarpuss, an all-female punk band who I believe hail from California. Besides all this the official website has all the usual stuff to peruse at your leisure such as each back issue and the intelligently written passages by Lucifera. As far as I know the yahoo group for Endemoniada is still active as are the groups for NYDM and NYCMETALSHOWS so hook up with them if you haven't done so yet. - Dave Wolff (Ed. Note: Endemoniada #20 was reviewed in AEA #10, but since then more interviews and stuff have been added.)

EXPLOITATION JOURNAL Vol. 3 Issue 2 (8/10) $4.00
PO Box 1742; Baldwin, NY 11510 USA
www.cinefear.com
A product of the deranged mind of Keith J. Crocker, Exploitation Journal is a crash course in exploitation pictures and B-movies from the 1950s to the present. Truly deranged or not, Crocker is undeniably knowledgeable about his subject and publishes information you would likely have a difficult time finding anywhere else. There's a lengthy article on actor John Carradine of Autopsy of a Ghost and Los Vampiresse, an interview with Robert Carroll, director of the 1990 low budget picture Sonny Boy, chats with scream queens Sylvia Villalobos, Uschi Digart and Patty Breen, an interview with George Stover of the trashy sci-fi/horror flick Night Beast, obituary pieces on Joe Marzano who was a necrophile doctor in One Grave Too Many and Donn Davison who directed Death Farm and Blood Beast of Monster Mountain and an article about such sci-fi exploitation outings as 1956's Beast With A Million Eyes, 1982's Life Force (Tobe Hooper) and the British cult film from 1983, Xtro. There's also an article on Anchor Bay Entertainment, the company that re-released the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Three on a Meathook besides handling cult favorites Vengeance of She and Scars of Dracula, an article on the Salisbury Theatre, an adult theater that used to be in Long Island, a piece called Bathroom Cinema and other stuff to read about. The next ish will feature Vic Israel, Susan George and Lemora - Lady Dracula. - Dave Wolff

GOTHIC BEAUTY #15 (10/10) $4.95
4110 SE Hawthorne Blvd. #501; Portland, Oregon 92714 USA
www.gothicbeauty.com info@gothicbeauty.com
While Gothic Beauty always presented the goth mystique in a more diverse way than anything else I've seen dedicated to bringing out goth's latent allure, issue 15th has branched out to encompass an even wider aesthetic range. This mag has many pictorials to exhibit its expanding diversity. Heavy Red's Hotel Goth pictorial follows the traditional goth format of long, black tresses and black vestments as does an article on Manhattan clothing label Tripp NYC, the interview with Batty of Azrael's Accomplice Designs, a Plastik Wrap profile and a photographer profile on Wil Cohen. I should point out that this is not all the magazine has had to offer since it began its run, as blond and redhead goth women have adorned its covers and photo sections. Adding some more variety this issue is a pictorial of Nicomis, an "urban goth" model from New York City, an article on a trip staff writer Doreen took to Nepal and several articles discussing the goth thing as an honest fashion statement. Whether this is good or bad is up to the reader. Also interviews with Mortiis (Norway), Nicki Jaine (USA), Bella Morte (USA), Ego Likeness (USA), Astrovamps (USA) and other artists. Six pages of reviews and a lot of ads for goth/punk/fetish clothing. - Dave Wolff

INDUSTRIAL NATION #20 (10/10) $3.95 US $5.50 CAN
PO Box 2717; Oakland, CA 94602 USA
www.IndustrialnatioN.com info@industrialnation.com
The contents have short descriptions of the interviews, of which there are Laibach (Slovenia), Wolfsheim (Germany), Chemlab (United Kingdom), yelworC (Germany), Larvae (USA), Der Blutharsch (AustriaTalla 2XLC (Germany), La Floa Maldita (Germany), Andraculoid (USA), and a host of gothic and industrial bands. At the close of each interview are site addresses for the bands. Within the 33 pages of reviews are half-page commentaries on what's going on in gothic and darkwave, EBM and synthpop, industrial and coldwave, and experimental and noise. There is one page in the back of the magazine consisting of photos from various readers invited by the staff to contribute. I thought this section could have been bigger and more prominent. Just two scene reports but one is about the goth scene in Moscow, Russia (the other is about the L.A. goth scene). The Moscow report has a few website links for bands, zines and labels. Likewise worth mentioning are Brian Clarkson's In-Bytez profiles on Carphax Files (USA) and Censor (USA) and an interesting article called "State of the Industry." - Dave Wolff

MAXIMUM ROCKNROLL #260 (9/10) $4.00
PO Box 460760; San Francisco, CA 94146-0760 USA
www.maximumrocknroll.com mrr@maximumrocknroll.com
The thickest, most informative zine I've ever come across, Maximum Rock N Roll is well worth the four bucks you have to shell out. I hand it to the editors because MRR has been around forever and never changed its format to cater to the mainstream. Steadfastly staying underground and supporting the DIY ethic, this zine still packs every issue with plenty of information about the punk lifestyle all over the world, giving everyone the means to keep up with what everyone is doing elsewhere. I always considered the staff opinion columns the zine's most interesting aspect, even more so than the interviews. Mykel Board is still an active member of the MRR squad and has much to say as always, as do George Tabb, Maddy, Mitch Cardwell, Felix Havoc, "Lefty" Hooligan, Jessica Mills, Elliott Lange and Anonymous Boy, et al. A news section opens with an article on the current Iraqi situation and other pieces as detailed and intelligently written as any major newspaper, if not more so. The interviews are with The Partisans (Uninted Kingdom), Technocracy (Japan), The Total End (USA), The Dick Spikie (Japan) and others. Still more to offer is a punk scene report from Southeast Asia, a report from London and a tribute to the late John Pell who passed away last year. Music reviews, film reviews, zine reviews and book reviews to peruse. - Dave Wolff

MOJO Feb. 2005 (10/10) 3.99 pounds UK
Mappin House; 4 Winsley St.; London W1W 8HF United Kingdom
www.mojo4music.com mojo@emap.com
Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols on the front cover, two articles on Sid inside and a Roots of the Sex Pistols bonus CD; all this is why I wanted to write a review of this mag. The articles, written by Bob Gruen and David Dalton, trace Sid's life back to his childhood and is plastered with rare photos; one photo shows his James Dean/Elvis/Frankenstein's monster presence onstage with the Pistols. The CD includes the Pistols' "Seventeen," the MC5's "Shakin Street," the Runaways' "Cherry Bomb," the New York Dolls' "Chatterbox" and Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers' "Born To Lose." Mick Wall writes an article on the rise and fall of Guns N Roses, and Sylvie Simmons writes on about Marianne Faithful. If you're a closet fan of Bob Dylan, Parliament Funkadelic and the Manic Street Preachers, you get to read about them here. There are brief pieces on Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video (with werewolves and zombies, directed by John Landis) and ten "Japanese noise bands" from the 70s, 80s and 90s, such as Satanic Hell Slaughter and Congenital Hemmorhoids. - Dave Wolff

PROFANE EXISTENCE #46 $5.00
PO Box 8722, Minneapolis, MN 55408 USA
www.profaneexistence.com PE@profaneexistence.com
Profane Existence is a political/punk zine marking its 15th anniversary. The fall/winter 2004 issue has close to 100 pages of interviews, reviews, opinion columns, reports on the punk scenes in Ireland and Nepal and a handful of news articles. Reviewed this issue are Witch Hunt (USA), Wolfbrigade (Sweden), Profits (USA) and artist Rob Middleton whose talents have been lent to The Annihilated, Deviated Instinct, Servitude, Extreme Noise Terror, Napalm Death and others. There's a seven page article on July 2004's C.L.I.T. Fest, a two-day event with punk and hardcore bands from Minnesota and all over the country including Human Order, Disrespect, Provoked, Behind Enemy Lines, Voetsek, Profits and Garmonbozia. The article has a rundown of the fest and live photos of the bands. The scene report from Ireland mentions independent promoters, punk and Oi bands, websites, labels and distros. The Nepal scene report focuses on the D.I.Y. punk industry and the current political situation there. The news articles cover a range of topics including a rape at a Philadelphia punk fest. a political prisoner serving two life sentences on trumped charges and abortion issues in Washington. 17 pages of music, zine and book reviews and a letters column finish this issue. Many ads to look over throughout. - Dave Wolff

SHORT, FAST & LOUD #12 (7/10) $3.00
225 Lincoln Ave.; Cocati CA 94931 USA
Akautsch@aol.com
This zine just bombards you with reviews and staff picks. I counted thirty-one pages of reviews altogether, another eight where each staff writer chooses their best albums and compilations and one writer column with still more album reviews. One of the review sections is called "Blasts from the Past" and features a number of records by obscure Japanese punk bands like Bastard, Bones, Matsuji, Noise Distraction and SVS. In another section, each staff writer chooses their five all-time influential punk compilations. This part of the issue is quite lengthy and very informative where the history of punk is concerned. There's a demo reviews section, an extensive CD reviews section and even more reviews from staff writer Jeb Branin in his staff column "A Million Ways of Saying Brutal." It's always a good thing to discover that other people out there remember Exciter. Jeff Robinson's "In Memory of Generic Thrash" column recalls when bands were forced to stick things out for years before their first album saw the light of day. On to the interviews, another section called "Teen Beat" has brief Q&A sessions with young bands including Collateral Damage (USA), Mutual Abuse (USA) and Hostile Takeover (USA). The main interviews are Cattle Decapitation (USA), Ludicra (USA), Vilently Ill (USA) and more. - Dave Wolff

SLAVA UNDERGROUND FANZINE #1 (8/10) $5.00
64/99 M.1 Bangkrui-Sainoi Rd.; Bangkrang, Muang; Nonthaburi 11000 Thailand
iamsatanist@darksites.com
According to editor Natthapton Kamonsin, this was a year and a half in the making, but there's a lot of stuff here making it worth the wait. Most of the interviews are Kamonsin's, except for two by Scott Keough of Mutilated Zine and Distro who likewise contributes to Canadian Assault (USA), Everyday Hate (USA) and Forgotten Chapel (Poland). Keough interviews Canadian Assault and Atavism (Greece) while Kamonsin speaks to Northern Sound Records (Finland), Tragedy Begins (Greece), Bloody Gore (Indonesia), Kratornas (Philippines), Prologue Ad Nocturne (Singapore), Myring (Finland), Soils Of Fate (Sweden), Nyarlathotep (Japan), Vrykolakas (Singapore), Korihor (Philippines), Forgotten Silence (Czech Republic), Eternal Throne (Singapore) and Vintage Solemnity (Turkey). A Panama scene report penned by Ricardo Brenes includes into about Septicemia, The Ancestral, Asatru, Mortuus, Kaligena, Lebzul and Ministros Del Santuario and more info about web sites and radio programs. Kamonsin writes a scene report from Thailand, listing a number of local bands such as Heretic Angels, Dark Mystery, In Darkness I Dwell and Surrender Of Divinity (who also have an interview here) besides a number of fanzines, labels and production companies. Three pages of CD reviews, two more pages of zine reviews and advice from Keough on supporting the underground. With $7 comes a 90 minute pro-compilation tape. - Dave Wolff

UNRESTRAINED! #25 (10/10) $4.99
5625 Glen Erin Dr.; Unit 57; Mississauga, ON; L5M 6V2 Canada
www.unrestrainedmag.com info@unrestrainedmag.com
Editor Adam Wasylyk dedicated issue #25 to the memory of the late Quorthon, noting the widespread influence Bathory has had on metal in the 80s and 90s. Wasylyk announces the arrival of Brian Munson as the new layout designer. The professional art direction Munson does is on a level with mags like Terrorizer. A section on the Canadian black metal scene was written for this issue that Wasylyk imagines will further expand the diversity of Unrestrained! A handful of corpsepainted and non-corpsepainted bands are introduced to the readers; Axis of Advance, Dead of Winter, Funeral Fog, Supremacy, Volkurah, Frozen Shadows, Anhkrehg, Eclipse Eternal and Operation Winter Mist; with website and email addresses for each band. Preceding this is a Galy Records ad (galyrecords.com) with releases from Anhkrehg and Eclipse Eternal in case you're interested. Seven pages of reviews and a one page "rim shot" review section with pictures of facial expressions added to elaborate on Kevi-Metal's thoughts about the CDs reviewed there. Interviews hgere with Mastodon (USA), Neurosis (USA), The Haunted (Sweden), Borknagar (Norway), Amon Amarth (Sweden), Xasthur (USA), Nebelhexe (Norway), NON's Boyd Rice (USA), Grave (Sweden), Ministry (USA), Crisis (USA), Megadeth (USA), Shadows Fall (USA), Suffocation (USA), Incantation (USA) and Judas Priest (UK). - Dave Wolff
