In Memory of Dimebag Darrell 1966-2004 R.I.P.
"Dimebag" Darrell Abbott was fatally shot on the night of December 8. Obsessed stalker Nathan Gale entered Columbus, Ohio's Alrosa Villa club where his band Damageplan was scheduled to play, walked onstage at the beginning of the performance and shot him at point blank range. Abbott was shot multiple times by Gale before he opened fire on the audience, killing employee Erin Halk, bodyguard Jeff Thompson, and fan Nathan Bray. Gale injured tour manager Chris Paluska and drum technician John Brooks; and took a hostage. Columbus police officer James Niggemeyer entered the club alone and without backup, killing Gale before he could kill the hostage. The incident sent shockwaves throughout the heavy metal community, and the Internet was deluged with traffic from fans of Damageplan and Pantera who expressed their grief at the shooting. "This is the worst day in metal history," one devastated fan posted in reaction to the news. This sentiment was shared by fans and artists alike. Response in the music press was overwhelming as Abbott's friends in the metal industry came forward to speak. Artists who paid their final respects include Ozzy Osbourne, Dave Mustaine, Zakk Wylde, Scott Ian, Ted Nugent, Eddie Van Halen, Lemmy Kilminster, FUSE/URANIUM hostess Juliya Chernetsky, Drowning Pool, Jonathan Davis of Korn, Wes Borland of Limp Biskit, Shawn Crahan of Slipknot, Damageplan vocalist Pat Lachman, Superjoint Ritual frontman Phil Anselmo and of course Damageplan drummer Vinnie Paul. And last but not least, countless people in the underground have come forward to offer their thoughts. Heres what a few people had to say:
"Easily one of the top 10 most influential guitarist of the last 15 years. Although I am hardly a fan of Pantera myself, as a guitarist I could not help but be affected by his musicianship. He had a very unique sound and a disciplined approach that will make his guitar playing stand as a model of the extreme form of guitar playing for years to come."
- John Henry Sheridan - Lead Guitarist for LevelSix
"I am still devastated by what happened to Dimebag Darrell, all the road crew, and fans that night. Pantera was the first metal band that I was totally obsessed with. I went to every show no matter how many hours away just so I could see one of my favorite metal bands play live and get a new tour shirt. Dimebag is one of the main reasons I picked up my first guitar at 14 and started my first metal band. I couldn't see myself where I am today, working for a metal label, if it weren't for Dimebag and Pantera. He sparked a major interest in metal for me because he was so down to earth and made it seem like anyone could do it. You didn't have to be some slime-ball industry scum; you could just be a metal head. Just seeing all the home videos made me think 'Damn I want to do this!'. I mean what's better than working with what you love? He wasn't untouchable. He was always so cool to the fans and made everyone feel like they were special which I can't say about too many other bands at his level."
- Kelli Malella, Metal Blade Records
"Yeah, I thought it was a really heinous thing to hear about this gutair god get capped on stage in Columbus, Ohio. First off, I know that Nathan Gale was not a fan of either Pantera or Damageplan. Cause if he was, he would not have done that disgusting thing he did. Secondly, in all the years and all of the shows I had ever seen, that stuff had never happened ever till that night at Columbus! I had been to so many shows, seen 70 plus bands in my lifetime so far that were way more extreme sounding. The worse was some girl got a bottle broken over her head at Cannibal Corpse. She had to go to the hospital. Second worst was me getting my ribs and legs bruised at Mortician but that was great anyway! When you go to a show, you let your frustrations out in a good way. The Dimebag thing is such a tragedy, not just to metal, but music in general. So I hope someone had the intention of whizzing on Nathan Gales grave recently! Because I may had considered the idea myself!!!!"

Pantera "We'll Grind That Axe For A Long Time"
Wears 10 crowns, dragons heads
Southern are the sons, Lords unmatched
- Their eyes dont look right, should they be trusted now?
Trashed-mouth Gods, avoided kings
With the spirit of revolt, the ghost of youth
Every fucking year it stays the same
Everybody changes to suit the day
Out of pride I'll isolate my fears
Never turned our backs on why we're here
We'll grind that axe for a long time
Follow close, train of fools
Just like them, just like you
- Their eyes don't seem right.
"Easily impressed" plague, dressed up fake
No respect
Every fucking year remains the same
Everybody sucks-up to suit the day
Out of hate I'll isolate myself
Through the worst we still marched into hell
We'll grind that axe for a long time
The smell in the air is chicken shit.
We'll grind that axe for a long time
Every fucking song remains the same
To everyone who sucks-up for the fame
Out of strength you know we speak the truth
Every trend that dies is living proof
We'll grind that axe for a long time
