BRAINSCAB #6 (7/10) FREE
Kevin Hansen; 450 Quail Run; Cheney, KS 67025 USA
www.brainscabzine.com scabofbrain@yahoo.com
Art by Mickmo (Bug Slayer, Tales of Retribution) adorns the front cover; there is no list of the bands that Kevin Hansen interviewed for this issue but they're listed on the next page with a piece of artwork by Kevin and a review of issue #4 from Static Zine. More artwork adorns various pages including an Endemoniada-esque piece of a women standing next to a gothic cross, a similarly themed drawing of a kneeling woman, a single-page comic of a medieval heroine battling a demon and more medieval work by Hansen on the back cover. The interviews are laid out front to end as opposed to a new interview on the following page, with the band logo preceding each chat to let the reader know which band is up next. Most of the interviews are Hansen's but a few guest interviewers contribute this issue. The bands who took the time to answer questions are Cattle Decapitation, Dark Matter, Human Ritual, Anomy, Dimensions Of Horror, Third World Sin, Godless and Pit Fiend among others. There are a couple review sections in the middle; Brainscans by Hansen and Scott's Shots by Scott Alsoglu, and another on the last page with zine reviews. Issue #7 is in the making as I write this and may be out by the time you read this. Hansen is also in search of more guest writers so contact him if interested. - Dave Wolff

DRUNKEN STORMTROOPER Volume 1 Issue 2.5 (7/10) FREE
PO Box 3547; Lantana, FL 33465-3547 USA
dbnhellspawn@cs.com
Drunken Stormtrooper is from the same people who give us DBN magazine. It's a limited edition newsletter consisting of material left over from the official DBN website. As it stands now the newsletter consists of one double sided page but a request is made in the brief editorial for artists to send in their stuff to expand it. A few pieces of Star Wars-based artwork (one of them depicts a stormtrooper holding a blaster rifle with a thought balloon above him to show his mind is on a blonde wearing a see through nightie) decorates the newsletter. This issue has four live reviews and a few book reviews at the bottom half of the back page. Included here is a humorous passage about the recent "motivational book" written and published by KISS' Gene Simmons christened Sex, Money, Kiss, along with a review of a retrospective on the Ramones. Issue #3 may be in circulation by the time you read this, so if interested send either a SASE or a trade for your copy. I still hope to obtain a new issue of DBN soon, but however short, this is decent to peruse as you wait. The previous issues contain music and zine reviews besides Star Wars and Vampirella stuff, some information about toys and collectibles and endorsements of different brands of beer and hard liquor the editor consumed while writing this. - Dave Wolff

ENDEMONIADA #20 (9/10)
www.endemoniada666.com / EndemoniadaZine@aol.com
Alas, the new issue of the legendary New York zine known as Endemoniada is to be the last one as Lucifera plans to channel her energies into the various branches of New York Death Metal. With so many zines having seen its last days in the past couple years I would've liked to see one continue that had no compunctions about taking chances by telling people there were women in the metal scene that were in fact into it for the music, not to "look good" dressing up for a show or meeting the boys in the band. You may remember this zine was mentioned in an article on the metal scene the Village Voice ran back in the 90s. I imagine the women's chapter of NYDM will continue as Endemoniada had back then. Endemoniada also helped fuel my interest in Norwegian and Swedish black metal when I discovered it so that's another reason it saddens me that it's folding. The bands featured here include Yonkers death metallers Malignancy, Invidia, Iris of the Monday Night Mayhem radio program, Metallikate of Ruffage Radio and Sugarpuss, an all-female punk band who I believe hail from California. Besides all this the official website has all the usual stuff to peruse at your leisure such as each back issue and the intelligently written passages by Lucifera. As far as I know the yahoo group for Endemoniada is still active as are the groups for NYDM and NYCMETALSHOWS so hook up with them if you haven't done so yet. - Dave Wolff

FILTH! #4 (8/10) 35p
25 Pirbright Rd.; London SW18 5NB; UK
This 18-and-over underground comic from England is described on the cover as "vile", "disgusting", "the best in dustbin humor" and "bloody cheap gives away a piece of breakfast cereal with each thousandth copy. If you took this last part seriously, this comic will likely offend you as its editors have mastered the art of toilet humor in each strip they publish. There is some punk rock imagery here, like in the Sue Pahglod strip that complements the editorial on the next page from a glowering half-human half-skull with a mohawk and a monstrously protruding tongue. There is more punk imagery in the strips dedicated to Ronnie Pritchin, Des Troy and Terry Bullpuns who's turned dissing people's mothers into an art form, which usually gets him hit by everyone he comes across. Baby Bastard is another strip worth mentioning, being a series about the world's most foul-mouthed infant. All these strips are artfully done and could be published in a local newspaper here or in the UK or anywhere else. Personally I'd like to see Ronnie Pritchin cross paths with Sue Pahglod and see what happens when he comments on the size of her chest. There's no front cover here; the strips start right in the "cover page" and there is a letters section in the middle for you to sound off if you loved this or were offended. - Dave Wolff

FISHCOMCOLLECTIVE #4 FREE
Rootjenswig 6; B-9200 Grembergen; Belgium
www.fishcomcollective.net / fishcom@pi.be
I received a copy of this from the same guy who sent me the Viscera promo (see CD reviews) and I figured I'd give it a little more exposure. At least 1500 copies were distributed around the world to promote fishcomeollective.net, a Belgian webzine with CD reviews, live reviews, interviews, articles and so on. Some reviews on the webzine are reproduced in this four-page newsletter along with a small advertisement of the website and another advertisement at the end that describes the staff of the webzine as an organization that supports underground music. This issue has 34 reviews in all, the site has tons more along with news, faq, contacts and a guestbook where you can advertise your own stuff. Bands who have promos reviewed in this newsletter include Sublime Cadaveric Decomposition, Nadja, Gardenia, leng t'che, Enthroned, Sacrificial, Bowel Stew, happy hippos masaker, Flesh Made Sin, Self Inflicted and Neuropathia. - Dave Wolff

KENTUCKY FRIED AFTERBIRTH #7 (8/10) PRICE NEGOTIABLE
141 Monatugue Rd.; Leytonstone; London; E11 3EW; UK
http://kfa-uk.tripod.com/frames_nj.htm / graham.fraser5@virgin.net
This zine's wonderfully tasteless is the first thing that's certain to offend somebody. Then we get to the editorial on the next page which gives you a taste of what is to come once you start reading on. A recurring column called "Tales from the Grey Side" reveals itself on intermittent occasions. Some of the most amusing anecdotes are editor Grey Fraser on AnagramGenius.com, a parody advertisement for St. John's Wort, Grey telling how he had to get new break blocks for his mountain bike and wiping one's own backside with wool buds. Like the guys of Metal Rules! zine, Grey throws in a lot of pictures with captions tacked on underneath; many of these are quite long for captions and hilarious to read. The bands Grey's interviews this issue include Gorerotted, Coldblooded, Ligature, Decayed, Earthcorpse, Serenade/Golden Lake Productions and a double interview with Vehemence and Morose. Grey is honing his skills of ribbing interviewees as he thinks up more than a few inventive ways to break a subject's balls. Grey likewise has much to say in his music and zine reviews. For all you Jesus screamers (to coin a phrase from Sodom) there's a column by John Tarantula self-explanatorily named "Kentucky Fried Christian Metal" which reports Dan Spitz of Anthrax recently came to a spiritual revelation and found God. I don't know if it's true or a joke; get this and decide for yourself. This issue also includes a CD compilation featuring Gorerotted, Earthcorpse, Paradox, Dam, Brainchoke, Ligature, Vastion and others. - Dave Wolff

METAL RULES! #17 (8/10) $4.95 ($5.95 Canada)
3 Overbrook Circle; Moorestown, NJ 08057 USA
www.metal-rules.com / metaljeff@comcast.net
This issue has two covers, the first of Dani Filth and Robert Davi, the second of Courtney Peldon of TV's Boston Public and Alicia Arden. I imagine a cover shot with both of them together in a boxing ring would have grabbed much attention for this issue. The ultra-long talks with these actresses make up for the lack of such a photo shoot. Look for the part in Peldon's interview where she talks about when she fondled another woman's breasts. In addition to these interviews there are interviews with Robert Davi and Dean Cameron, who played Francis "Chainsaw" Grimp in that old 80's movie Summer School and Martin Starr of TV's Freaks And Geeks. This kicks the actor articles up to five this issue. Dani Filth is also here, of course, along with Danny Lilker, Opeth, Blaze Bayley, CKY, and E. Town Concrete. All these are done with the witty rapport that has become synonymous with Metal Rules for those readers who enjoy reading zines with a heavy dose of humor. Almost 20 pages of reviews are here with a double page by-day spread of Metalfest 2003 by Angus and Hardcore Brian who had more to relate about the day two. All around the humor has reached new heights as the more photos and captions were added to the Metal Rules! formula. With all this in mind, I got an idea of what I'd most like to see in a future issue from the Red Chord interview: an interview with the female leads of TV's Charmed. - Dave Wolff
