BLOOD RED THRONE
Interview with Dod

You've heard about black metal bands in Norway that evolved from death metal bands. Blood Red Throne was born in 1998 when the Norwegian black metal pioneered by Mayhem and Emperor was at its peak. A love for the brutal side of music on the part of founding member Dod was what pulled BRT together. Dod and former Emperor member Tchort who were in Satyricon's touring band did covers of Death, Obituary and Deicide with drummer Freddy "Fred The Shred" Bolso and began to compose their own music when bassist Erlend Casperson joined. Their DeathMix 2000 demo led to a recordng deal with Hammerheart Records and they recorded their first full-length Monument of Death with Mr. Hustler. The first metal CD recorded at Kristiansand's Dub Studios, Monument of Death was produced by Endre Kirkesola. Mixing of the full-length was in Malmo, Sweden's Berno Studios by Henrik Larsson. Former Slagmark drummer Espen "Beist" Antonsen replaced Freddy Bolso after the band released their A Taste for Blood NCD and a string of festivals prepared the extreme metal world for Affiliated With the Suffering. Altered Genesis is Blood Red Throne's first release on Earache Records, and features a cover of M.O.D.'s "Hate Tank."

What meaning does the name Blood Red Throne have for the band?
It's taken from a lyric Tchort wrote almost 15 years ago. We just thought it fit the band and our music...

Being a death metal band from somewhere long renowned for a thriving black metal scene, how has Blood Red Throne made a name for themselves in Norway?
Death metal is expanding here in Norway, and we have some cool bands. To us, it's just the style we want to play, and don't give a shit if black metal has a strong position here...

In what ways would you say Blood Red Throne differs from American death metal bands and death metal bands elsewhere? What sets you apart from most death metal bands?
Some of us still think the US death metal is the ultimate extreme musicical style. Many death metal bands of today focus on just playing real fast. BRT also enjoys the fast parts and some of the modern extreme music, but we really have to incorporate the heavy stuff and those killer head spinning riffs! We're not super original, which almost is impossible these days, but we often hear that people recognize our sound and riffs.

Although Blood Red Throne classify themselves as death metal, has black metal had any kind of an influence on you? If so, which aspects of your style resonates with this most?
You'll find some black metal elements in our music, but that's just natural since we've been a part of that scene as well for over ten years! I guess some of the speed picking and nasty riffs we have originates from our black metal background.

When founding members Dod and Tchort were touring with Satyricon back in 1998, what made them decide to start looking for a drummer to jam with them?
Basically, because we wanted to form an extreme band of our own. Tchort did start his first death metal band back in 1991, and I have wanted to play this style since I picked up the guitar in 1993. Why it took so long, is pretty much the lack of a real good drummer, and it wasn't until 1998 we met Freddy, our first drummer...

Before you hooked up with Tchort upon starting the band, he wrote songs and planned to release a CD for a planned project, Green Carnation. When did his songs become part of Blood Red Throne's repertoire? When the band was born, how did the other members respond to them?
To clear things up, I started BRT, but I hooked up with Tchort right after I found the drummer. Tchort have had tons of old riffs, meant to be used for his first death metal band, Green Carnation. But they only released one demo in the early 90's, so he was left with all his ideas. Many of these riffs appear on all our albums, and especially on Altered Genesis, Tchort has used many of his old riffs. Old or not, we all enjoy his riffs and makes our material even more varied!

Describe the lineup changes you have undergone.
Basically, we've had quite a steady line up. We've separated with two drummers, but other than that, we've stuck together!

Describe the periodic label shifts the band have gone through since you started releasing your albums. Which label is the band on now and how much has the label helped you?
Hammerheart released our two first albums and a mini album between 2000 and 2003. Then we signed to our current label, Earache, which is releasing our new album 21st of February. Everything's worked fine so far, so we'll just have to see what the future brings...

What made you decide to include the songs from your demo Deathmix 2000 on A Taste For Blood? Did the remasters of these songs, the stuff from your debut CD and the song you covered by Massacre (originally from the Nordic Metal II compilation) produce better results in terms of production and delivery?
We've had a lot of demands for this demo, so we just thought it was cool to make the songs available on a mini-album. I really like the sound on the demo, and it's not that different on this album. The songs from Monument of Death is the same production, and the Massacre cover we recorded in a couple of days for this album. This cover song is not on the Nordic Metal II compilation! That compilation features a demo version of the song, Monument of Death...

Describe the appearances Blood Red Throne made at the Inferno Festival and Southern Discomfort Festival while you were working on your second CD Affiliated with the Suffering. Did these fest appearances generate favorable responses? Which bands did you most enjoy sharing the stage with when you performed at these fests?
To be quite honest, The Inferno Festival was a total disaster for BRT. The monitoring was bad as hell and we really had some technical problems. This was also our second gig ever, but we had no chance to do a great job... Strangely, people reacted very positive to us and they seemed to enjoy both old songs and the new ones we presented from our forthcoming album. However, we did a killer gig at the Southern Discomfort and besides the last gig we did on our European tour in 2003, I really can't remember any bad gigs we've done! I really appreciated the performance of our friends in Lowdown at the Inferno Festival and Extol was awesome at Southern Discomfort.

When Espen "Beist" Antonsen (formerly of Slagmark) joined the band to replace Freddy B., what new aspects were brought to Blood Red Throne's sound?
We basically had a lot of the material ready before Beist joined, but I guess his style is a bit faster playing, but not as groovy as Freddy was...

Altered Genesis is to be released in February 2005. Do you predict the underground will receive it as eagerly as A Taste For Blood and Affiliated with the Suffering?
I sure hope so. This is the best BRT has to offer so far, and fans of the band and death metal in general shouldn't be disappointed by this one...

What inspired the album title? Is there a concept tying the songs together? If so, please describe it.
Well, I interpret it as BRT being this creation in constant progression. The lyrics just fit wit the package, and deal with murdering, written in a twisted and sophisticated way.

With the exception of the intro track "Death of Birth", samples of the entire album can be previewed on your official site. Have you received any feedback about the new songs?
The response is awesome. People really like what they hear!

What are the best songs Altered Genesis has to offer in your opinion?
My personal favorites are Incarnadine Mangler, Tortured Soul Appearance and Arterial Lust.

What inspired Blood Red Throne to cover M.O.D.'s "Hate Tank"? Currently, it can also be previewed on your site. How does the cover compare to the original? Are you big M.O.D. fans? In addition to "Hate Tank", which other M.O.D. songs would you have covered?
Tchort and I decided to pick one cover song each when we were about to record the Affiliated With The Suffering album. I chose Obituary, Deadly Intentions, which is featured on the digi pack version of that album. Tchort chose M.O.D. and this one is featured on the re-release of AWTS, which recently came out along with the re-release of our debut. I believe Tchort is the only real fan of M.O.D. Personally, I've only heard a few songs...

Where does Blood Red Throne intend to tour in support of Altered Genesis? What do you expect fan response to be when you go out on the road?
We're supposed to support Malevolent Creation on their second half of their European tour. That means we'll visit some of the European stages between April 15th and May 8th! We'll most certainly do our best to kick ass, and hopefully the audience will enjoy themselves and maybe go insane...

Do you plan to sample songs from future albums on your website?
I really don't know, but it's ok to put out some teasers I think.

Any final remarks?
Altered Genesis offers some fine death metal. Feel free to check it out. Also visit our website at www.bloodredthrone.tk. Thanks for this extensive interview and stay heavy!
