SOCIETY 1
Interview with Matt Zane by Dave Wolff

NEW! Poetry and Doll Maker with Galleries!     [Learn About Our Ecommerce]
Graphics Gallery!

When was SOCIETY 1 formed?
June, 1998.

What is the current line up of the band?
Vocals: Matt Zane; Drums: Jame Potter; Guitar: Devon Norris; Bass: Justin Reynolds:

Which bands do you cite as influences?
THE DOORS, PINK FLOYD, MARILYN MANSON, LED ZEPPELIN

Tell about your album, Slacker Jesus.
Slacker Jesus is a loosely based conceptual album that was written about an alter ego character that is basically an exaggerated version of my subconscious.

Have you been touring to support Slacker Jesus? How has it gone so far? What bands have you gone on the road with?
We've been touring, pretty much on the West Coast. It's been difficult with some of the shows that we did with PRO-PAIN and PIZZING RAZORS because our music is a different style, but they were very supportive. Other gigs have been very positive.

Describe what goes on at a typical SOCIETY 1 show.
It really depends on the age group of the participants. But, basically, we like to define our concerts as an electric shaman experience. At the 18+ shows, we will incorporate a heavy sexual overtone to bring people to madness. Nevertheless, with sex, or without, we are about the exploration of the unconscious mind and all of the hidden desires that one harbors within ones self. We endorse any hedonistic behavior that presents itself in the audience.

The band has been featured in such mainstream magazines as DETAILS and SPIN. What kind of an experience was it receiving exposure through those magazines? Which other magazines have you had an interview in?
It's funny when you come out in these publications and you haven't even released your album yet and they talk about you as if you have already sold a million records. You are presented as if you are already an established rock star but in actuality my whole music career has just begun so I feel like the articles have almost jumped the gun. Never the less, they are much appreciated. It's exciting and overwhelming especially when bands you listen to haven't even had such articles written about them. I've also appeared in PAPER, FLIPSIDE, RAY GUN, CARBON 14, POP SMEAR, BIKINI, LOLLIPOP, PEACE & BLEACH plus hundreds of E-zines and porno rags.

Tell us about the full-length movie you released along with the record. How did you hook up with RON JEREMY while making it?
Basically, the movie is the lighter side of the band. It's what we like to do when we're not performing or writing. We never understood people trying to separate sex and rock, especially in the '90s, so we decided to bring it back larger than ever before. RON and I have been friends for almost 3 years now. He started shooting with me around my 4th or 5th movie. He's a totally cool guy and very supportive of my career.

Any other projects in the works?
Well there's always projects in the works, but the two things that I'm most excited about right now are (1) a live Internet party called House of Flesh 3, which you can gain information about on my web-site at zanevideo.com and (2) the possibility of a spoken word album.

What are your ultimate hopes for the band's future?
For my band's future, I want to be able to support our musical habits as well as our touring schedule. Fame and fortune is always nice but the ability to have artistic freedom and the capitol to support that freedom is really what it's all about for me.

Any final statements?
Yes I have final statements! Go get the CD, go get some of my videos, I recommend the Backstage Sluts and Sexual Society lines. Check them out and send your comments to my fan club: Matt Zane, Zane Entertainment Group, 21526 Osborne St., Canoga Park, CA 91304. I know what I think. I want to know what you think.
