Interview by Dave Wolff

When was Medusa formed? Who started the band? What's the inspiration for the name?
The band was started several years ago by original member Wez. The original guitar player suggested the name after watching the movie Clash of the Titans.

What is the complete lineup at this point? How long has this lineup been together?
The line-up on the CD had been together for the past two years, but recently stripped back to a 3-piece consisting of Wez: Vocals/Bass, Greg: Guitar, and Patrick: Drums. This is three out of the four members on the CD.

What inspired your decision to play classic metal? How dedicated are you to classic metal's return?
We didn’t necessarily set out to play classic metal, but as the band evolved over time we eventually settled on the sound that we have today. I don’t know if you would call us dedicated, but none of us would be sorry to see the return of classic metal.

What bands do you cite as influences? What bands do you listen to the most?
The band has some pretty varied influences, everything from AC/DC and Kiss, thru to Slayer and Pro-Pain. What bands we listen to the most depends on whose in charge of the car stereo!

Is there a substantial audience for classic metal in Australia? What style of metal do people listen to over there? Do you see things changing at all in the future?
There is still a reasonable audience for heavy metal here in Australia, although it is not as big as it was couple of years ago. The current trend is towards newer bands such as Slipnot, Coal Chamber and Fear Factory, but classic metal may have resurgence due to the current trend towards anything retro.

How's your CD demo been received? Are you satisfied with the results on the CD?
The overall response to the CD has been extremely positive. We are receiving very good reviews around the world and also airplay in places such as Canada, the U.S, Europe and also Australia. We are very happy with the results on the CD when you consider like most first releases, it was done on a limited budget and time frame.

In what ways would you like to do things differently recording the next CD?
We don’t think we’d do anything differently on the next CD, but a bigger budget would definitely help.

In the US there is a lot of infighting between bands into different styles of underground metal, though that has been fading away of late. Do bands in Australia into different styles of metal get along well? What lessons could American bands learn from Australian bands in that regard? Which bands have you played with?
Most of the bands over here get along fairly well, even if they play different styles. Because the scene isn’t as big as the states, the bands know each other and support each other. There isn’t much room for infighting.

Do you think it's better or not to be into a variety of styles of underground metal? How come?
We think it’s definitely better to be into a variety of styles of metal, because if you listen to one band or style, it’s very easy to stagnate and sometimes just listening to something new or different can inspire new ideas.

What's next for Medusa?
Touring. We are looking to get out and play live in as many different places as possible. We will also be recording some shows for a possible live CD and will hopefully have another studio release around the end of the year.

What's Medusa's ultimate goal?
To make good music, to be entertaining and to take that as far as we can.

Any closing comments?
We’d like to thank everyone around the world that has gotten behind the band and the CD. The interest and support have been incredible. Cheers.
