MAXIMUM ROCK N ROLL # 238
PO Box 460760; San Francisco, CA 94146-0760 USA
MRR has been around forever and as far as Im concerned its the worlds finest print zine dedicated to punk and hardcore to ever be published. This zine has everything from interviews to music reviews to worldwide scene reports to columns by the immortal Mykel Board among other staff members. Virtually all of the bands featured in these pages are bands youd never hear of anywhere else and get their name around strictly by word of mouth. Interviews this issue are with Dystopia (USA), Rambo (USA), World Burns to Death (USA), Rev. Beat-Man and the Monsters (Switzerland), and Chronics (USA) among others. That MRR has remained in existence for so long is more than enough to convince me that punk is not dead. I applaud them for keeping it up all these years and hope they dont quit now.
ENDEMONIADA WEBZINE #17
http://www.angelfire.com/ny3/ENDEMONIADA
Endemoniada (possessed female) used to be a print zine but switched to the world wide web a few years ago. Issue #17 has interviews with Mortician (USA), Lacuna Coil (Italy), Bloodthrone (USA), Lord Gore (USA), Cock and Ball Torture (Germany), Black Mass (USA), Master Steelow (USA), and Angela Gassow of Arch Enemy (Sweden) besides music and book reviews and an editorial by Lucifera about how the gender issue in the underground metal scene is becoming more irrelevant, and more attention is being paid to a female artists capabilities, not her looks. I always liked this zine and found it enjoyable from the questions that Lucifera and others on her staff asks interviewees besides all the readers feedback. I think Lucifera has been doing Endemoniada on her own since it became a webzine but there are many contributors helping out as well. The entire Endemoniada catalog is on the official website, and issue #18 (!!!) is out soon.
READ BETWEEN THE LIES #6
c/o Ian Heran; PO Box 362; Sonoma, CA 95476-0362 USA
This zine is published once every four months. Reverend Ian Heran calls it the opinionated consumer guide to metal. There is a brief editorial on the inner front cover with the site address and a list of Ians 25 best albums of 2002. Ive been reading this zine for several issues now but I especially enjoyed this one for the interviews with old school thrashers Nuclear Assault (USA) and hardcore veterans DRI (USA). The interviews this issue are pretty diverse, featuring many well known and newer extreme bands playing black, death and grind including Anal Cunt (USA), Kings Evil (Japan), Incantation (USA), Immolation (USA) Limbonic Art (Norway), The Berzerker (Australia), Dark Tranquility (Sweden) and Hate Eternal (USA). Each interview includes the bands site at the end. There is also an interview with Tomas of At The Gates (Sweden) with the announcement that Slaughter of the Soul has been re-released.
CANADIAN ASSAULT #7
c/o Dale Roy; Apt. #1; 6318 Bingham St.; Philadelphia, PA 19111 USA
The Sodomy and Lust issue featuring interviews with Deeds of Flesh (USA), Grand Belials Key (USA), Nun Slaughter (USA), Witchburner (Germany), Painiac records (Belgium), Gravewurm (USA), Unique Leader records (USA/Netherlands) and last but in no way least an older interview with Blasphemy (Canada). There are plenty of zine and demo reviews to go with the longer album reviews section, and theres a special page dedicated to the process of making a record. This zine is pieced together with a layout that reminded me of punk and old school thrash zines Write for ad / wholesale rates.
BUG SLAYER Issue #2, Volume #1
c/o Mickmo; 11411 Palmer; Kansas City, MO 64134 USA
The latest chapter in a post-apocalyptic series where mutant insects are taking over and the last humans try to fight them off. There are three central characters known as bug slayers and various species of insects called bug plagues written into the story with different characteristics that have assumed human traits to survive, and have no regard for humanity in their quest to dominate the planet. Mickmo develops all of this quite well and this has potential of being developed into a larger entity at some point in the future, like a series of novels or perhaps even a feature film. The chapters personified by each issue are relatively short but the artwork is good, especially the artwork drawn of the insects. If youre into sci-fi films like Starship Troopers and Aliens this should appeal to you.

PSYCHOSIS DEATH #2
c/o Fabiano Texiera; Rua Joaquim Matteus Correia, 24; Contendas; Taquaritinga / SP; 15900-000; Brazil
This is an extreme death/black metal fanzine featuring loads of porno\graphic violence thats not for the easily offended! There are tons of interviews with bands and independent labels with most of the emphasis on the Brazilian scene although the worldwide scene of extreme music is represented. These guys are very VERY enthusiastic about underground metal; that alone is reason enough to support this zine. Interviews include Blood Storm (USA), Fernando Camacho of Black Hole Productions (Brazil), Impaled Nazarene (Finland), Incrust (Brazil), Yattering (Poland), Expose Your Hate (Brazil), Oligarquia (Brazil) Inhumate (France), Disforterror (Brazil), Funeratus (Brazil), Impure (Germany), Dark Legion (USA), Nephash (Brazil), Gorerotted (UK), Khrophus (Brazil), Sublime Cadaveric Decomposition (France) and Apokalyptic Raids (Brazil). There is also a page long tour report by Descerebration (Brazil) written exclusively for the zine.

METAL RULES! #11
2116 Sandra Rd.; Voorhees, NJ 08043 USA
Alright, so this is an older issue, but its got an interview with Lee Tergesen, aka Tobias Beecher of HBOs Oz, which just aired its series finale recently. I am a really big fan of the show and thats one of the first interviews I read in that mag. The interviews are ultra long and give an impression of how comfortable Jeff is while doing his interviews. There are a bunch of funny pictures of Lee and other OZ cast members with the interview. Other interviews are with Spencer Milligan (Rick Marshall of the original Land of the Lost), Dimmu Borgir (Sweden), Napalm Death (UK), Flotsam and Jetsam (USA), Vintersorg (Sweden), Monstrosity (USA) and Malevolent Creation (USA) among others There is also an interview with Lorraine Lewis of Femme Fatale (USA) for those interested, Sure she is a hottie, but then again so is Cristina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil. All in all, a good zine that should break into the mainstream sometime soon. |
