How long have INBREED been in existence? Please describe the band's history.
INBREED was formed as HADES GATES around 1995. we started gigging in Austin, Texas and realized most people were expecting Death Metal so we changed the name to "the INBREED" and finally settled with INBREED. Brief history? Let's see; we have produced three pro packaged CDs and two pro recorded demos, and have done most of our gigging around Killeen / Harker Heights, Texas occasionaly taking an Austin gig, or a Dallas gig.

Are INBREED an old school thrash or retro thrash band? What inspired you to start the band as specializing in eighties metal?
INBREED is an Old School style traditional Thrash / Speed metal type band. We really didnt start the band off to be this style but it slowly evolved, mainly from crowd response to what we do today. Always go with what works, not a bad motto.

How much material has the band released so far? Are you generally satisfied with the quality of the recordings so far?
In 1996 we released our debut CD Back To The Underground; In 1997 we released the Consenting Goat CD; and in 1999 we released Bastards Forest CD. All three were pro packaged and shrink wrapped. Since then, we have mastered a live demo and and recorded 4 new tunes and calling the newest demo "Let the Witch Wars Begin" which includes the new songs as well as a few live ones. as far as recording quality goes, i cant even listen to the first two cd's anymore. they do in fact make me gringe. Bastards Forest was an improvement. The latest demo is the cleanest we have ever done, but my favorite is the the live demo we recorded in Dallas, Texas at the Galaxy club on July 16th, 2000. Ironically, it was cheapest to make; I recorded the show with a camcorder and had it mastered it on Pro Tools. That recording captures what INBREED really sounds like!!!!!!

Which eighties thrash bands do you listen to the most and would you cite as influences, collectively and as individuals???
I listen to Slayer, Testament and some Exodus. Those are the thrash bands anyways. I like Lizzy Borden alot to although thats not really thrash music. My guitar player(Bryan Smith); his thrash influences were old Metallica, Exodus, M.O.D., I think Over Kill too, but he was always obessed by Judas Preist. Those are the metal influences I can think of but his music influences go much deeper than that. He studies a lot of guitar players and is into all kinds of weird guitar influenced music. Our new drummer (Kelly Sodek) I really have no idea of what he is influenced by. He loves metal though and can name some bands he doesn't care for, but they're just local bands.

The band originally hail from Salado Tx. Is ther a large enough following of old school thrash/classic heavy metal where your from so that INBREED enjoy healthy turnouts during performances? would you like to see the situation improve?
Yeah, Salado is a very small town. There is no place to play here. We do play in Killeen/Harker Heights strip and have had big shows. Some are not so big, Killeen is a military town and the crowds are basically "hit or miss." We have played some crazy shows over the past 5 years. We have seen bones broken in our Pits and seen a lot of drunk mother fuckers; that includes us!!!!!! Yes, I would like the situation to improve. As of last November, the last rock bar closed down. Summer is on its way, another rock bar will open soon, they always do.

Are you friendly with many of the bands in the underground over there? Do metalheads get along well despite differences in what kind of extreme music they are playing?
Absolutely, we get along with anybody that chooses to get along with us!!! Good people are good people and assholes are assholes!!!! That's not defined by what kind of music you play....if your cool and a straight up G, I'll come out and support your band.

Has there been any label interest yet? if not, do you expect there to be any soon?
I guess there has been a little. A few labels have told us to "keep in touch" but nothing concrete. I think the labels that do write back are just doing so to cover there bases but I dont see any kind of sign we will be signed in this century!!!!!! It's become very apparent that if we want to do this and be succesful, we will have to figure out how to do it on our own. damned!!!! We don't even have a DJ that rocks a turn table and the thought of me trying to rap to metal is sickening.... YO!!!! WORD to the BEAST!!! Yeah, see I can't really do that shit. I'm ill.

How much coverage have INBREED got through radio and through fanzines and/or webzines since starting out? Which of these would you reccomend and and why? Has the internet affected the underground in your opinion?
We have gotten a lot of coverage through fanzines over the years. It was our only outlet until we got online... I used to send out at least 100 demo tapes a month to people listed in the METAL HEAD directory in Metal Edge magazine. Each month a new mailing list to work from. I did that for probably six months. I recomend any internet site as any document on the internet is a published document. You can promote your reviews from sites that get tons of hits and from sites that don't get many at all. It's all relevant.... you just need to promote those reviews. The internet has helped the underground out extremely. Right now I recomend Neckbreaker online, The-Plague, and Satan Stole My Teddy Bear, just because those sites have some cool INBREED reviews posted.... Hahhh!!!! And we have gotten radio locally on 107.3 the Fox and KLBJ 94.7fm Austin, as well as some college radio in detriot on CJAM and some European radio shows as well.

Who is the lyricist in the band? What kind of subject matter does he write about and where does the inspiration come from?
Well, I guess I write roughly 98% of the lyrics. I love writting lyrics for this band, it gives me chance to play like i'm Stephen King in 5 minutes or less. as of late, the subject matter seems to be about WICCA and WITCHCRAFT and times of old. It's just where the guitar riffs take my mind really. I was infleunced a lot by the writting of Lizzy Borden and Ronnie James Dio. as far as writting about witches, as a small child that was my biggest fear, unseen magic being cast onto you. As an adult I think I'm just cancelling out those childhood fears.

Do you correspond at all with other bands interested in bringing back a revival of old school thrash to the underground?
Yeah I correspond with this crazy fuck from Austraila named Zoran. He plays for DARK ORDER. Cool motherfucker!!!!!!

Are INBREED into watching horror/gore flicks from the eighties and nineties? If so, which are the bands personal favorites? How do these films compare to most of those of the mainstream?
Yeah, horror films are timeless to me. I get a lot of the lyrics for the band from movies when I'm not inspired. my fave movies are of course, TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 1&2 cause I drive by locations where both were filmed everyday when I go to work. 80's movies, I liked The Lost Boys, it wasn’t really scary but I liked the plot. the SEVENTH SIGN was cool.... not really scary though. I think John Carpenter wrote BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA…. it’s a five movie of mine that was classified horror but to me is a comedy. Some recent movies I have loved are LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW & THE NINTH GATE.....those rule to me.... DOGMA is a satirical horror film about religion. I do like the vampire movies as well. When BLAIR WITCH PROJECT came out, it sucked; the concept behind the BASTARDS FOREST CD was that movie. Bastards Forest could have been a soundtrack or that type of movie. BLAIR WITCH kicks though....

Many thrash bands from who were making a name for themselves during the eighties, such as Agent Steel and Flotsam and Jetsam, have been reforming to release new music these days. how do you guys feel about this? have you heard any new material from said bands and if so how does it compare to their classic material? do you listen to any newer bands coming out playing music that hearkens back to the classic era?
Man, its great to hear those bands are releasing material. More power to them and I hope they kick ass and sell a lot of albums. I haven’t heard any material but would like too. I do listen to traditional metal bands like ICED EARTH and HAMMERFALL.

In relation to the above question, which eighties bands that you really enjoyed would you most like to see get back together?? Do you think this would actually happen?
Metal Blade used to have this band called VIKING. I think that was the name. I thought they kicked ass., and doubt seriously they get back together, but I wouldn’t mind seeing METAL CHURCH & WATCHTOWER kick it again.

What is the bands opinion of new school black, death and doom metal? Are you into bands playing new styles of underground metal?
Yeah. More power to those bands and the fans that buy their albums. Most of that type of style isn’t for me, but that’s just me!!!!!!! I do spin CD's at the house from CONVENIENT, AMORPHIS, and even GOATWHORE. I just bought the new OPETH and I really like it. I’m not a real trendy guy so I don’t really know how those bands are classified. It’s like INBREED is a thrash band, but we play other styles too!!!

What’s your personal opinion of the way the general media views underground metal?
Hahh!!! Yeah, the general media wants to act like the underground don’t exist they don’t want to claim there is a whole generation of people that love darker music!!!!! MOCK THE INSTITUTION!!!!! It's the same from generation to generation. That’s why its so special when a band breaks through and shoves 4 fingers up the rectum of people who judge whets decent for our society. Fuck 'em!!!!!!

Which bands do you admire that you would most want to tour with?
Pantera, Slayer, or Exodus.... and of course any wimpy band that's selling a lot of albums. We love to blow people of the stage!

What's in the immediate future for INBREED?
We will probably start gigging again soon. I'm trying to get promos to everyone in the world that wants one. Probably by fall we will record some new tunes.

Anything you'd like to close with?
Yeah, Dave thanks for the review.... and thanks for the other support as well!!!!! there was a time when metal ruled supreme in the USA and thats 'cause we all stood united in support of a cause, that being the most kick ass style of music ever seen. It didn't matter if it was Tesla or Testament, Accept or Anthrax, Pantera or anything metal; the scene supported itself and it was exciting. They say a nation divided cannot stand, neither can a divided Metal nation. Strike the midnight hour. UNITE!!!!
