1. How long has Dedfuk Records been in existence? What inspired you to start a label?
I started Dedfuk in 1995, when i just joined Kuru. i mainly used it to put out our tapes, but i soon started doing distro for freinds and released a few tapes for other bands i was in touch with. I don't think i ever thought that i'd still be doing Dedfuk 5 years down the road, but it just picked up so much, it was impossible to stop.
2. Who is on the complete staff at Dedfuk?
I'm pretty much the Dedfuk guy and i'm in charge of the money shit, distro, and picking bands to put out, etc... But, i always get help and input from friends. We got Matt who is in charge of Dedfuk Online and most computer and internet related shit. I've also gotten help from Brent and Jay (ex-Kuru), on a few things as well. But, they've
kinda lost interest in this scene, even though we've remand best of friends.
3. Since first starting the label how well known has it become worldwide?
Shit man, i can't be totally sure. I know i've built a name and i get mail from all over the globe, but i'm still not making a living off Dedfuk, so i'm no Relapse or anything. I get between 2-4 letter a day, either for Dedfuk or Fuck The Facts. To be honest i never even really thought about it, it do this cause it's fun and keeps me out of trouble.
4. From what parts of the world are the bands you're most in contact with?
Like i said, i get mail and e-mails from all over. But, i'd say alot are from Europe, mainly France and Czech Rep. A bit form the states and elsewhere, and hardly anything from Canada, i find it funny, i think Canadians are more interested in outside contacts which is cool, but makes me think there's no bands here sometimes.
5. How wide a range is there of extreme bands whose material you carry?
I like to think we have the widest range of shit. If you wanna work with Dedfuk you have to be totally open-minded. None of this only the sick brutal shit, or only noise. Whatever, i love bands like Exhumed, but i also totally dig Mr. Bungle, and Merzbow. it's all about good interesting music, whatever the style, and a question of taste. We carry everything From death-grind-noise-punk-black-experimental-crust, etc.. the list is endless! I just won't even touch any nazi, racist or homophbic shit, this is trash that has no place in this world.
6. Is there a high number of distros where you're from? Would you like to see more pop up in the future?
I think there's one other one in Ottawa, besides me, that's run by one of the guy's from Buried Inside, but it caters more to the hard-core scene with a bit of metal. In Montreal there's, Warfare Recs, and Fish distro that i know of, but there's probably a lot more i can't think of now. If someone wants to start a distro, they should go a head, but it's a lot of work, and it won't make you rich unless you wanna just sell black metal cds for $35.
7. How's the punk, metal and hardcore scenes over there? In what ways would you like to see them improved for the better?
Our scene is very small, but it's defenitly not the worst. We have some good bands down here, like Deamon, Recondite, Buried Inside, etc... and we all get along, and do shows together. I guess for improvement it'd be good to have more people come out to shows, i mainly mean bands that don't go to shows unless their playing or it's Cannibal Corpse or something. We have so few shows hear and we all know way ahead of time, that everyone should be able to come down and check it out. But, some people are lame and would rather play video games at home, and then complain that "so and so" didn't go to thier show. Also, we need more bands!!
8. What bands do you listen to personally? Do you read many fanzines? If so, which ones do you read most?
I listen to so much shit, and all kinds, it's hard for me to say. Some of my favorite bands at the moment are; Discordance Axis, Bathtub Shitter, John Zorn, Disrupt, Village People, Masonna, etc.. too many to mention. I don't read many fanzines (sorry!) i just don't have much free time that i can just sit down and read about music, and when i do alot of the time i prefer to read a book, cause i'm all metaled out. But , the best zine i ever read was Doom Hauled, check it out if you can, cause it'll change your life. i've also be talking about bringing back my zine, "Grindfucker", as a web-zine.
9. Describe the website you have for your label? How has it been coming along? What effect has the Internet had on the underground in your opinion?
Well, Matt does the whole web-site, so he'd be the best person to ask, but it looks good and is updated regularly, so i can't complain. I think the internet is a good thing for everyone, and a bad thing to i guess. It's good cause it makes it easy for us to get in contact fast and saves us money on postage, we can also get all the info on bands and labels we're into and discover new ones easily. it's bad in the way that it makes us lazy, bombards us with advertising, and can be insanely addictive.
10. What is your opinion of the infighting between fans of different styles of metal? What effect is having on the scene as a whole?
Any In fighting is retarted, and will solve nothing. Let people enjoy what they want, who gives a fuck. Any fighting in the scene can't be good.
11. What are your aspirations for the future of Dedfuk?
Our catalog keeps growing so i hope our sales will as well. We're starting to put out cd's now, and we'll start with a Kuru / Fuck The Facts split, we're also still looking for bands for our 2 cd comps that we're putting together, so bands should get in touch!! We're also looking for bands to release on splits and shit, so send your promo shit. I just hope to do this as long as it's fun to do , once it's not, i'll quit . No huge aspirations, just to have fun and spread some good musick around.
12. Any final remarks?
