What inspired you to start CANDYASS?
G: Being in a band was a dream that I didn't think would go any further than me with a hairbrush in front of a full-length mirror pretending it was a video or huge stage. Me & some chicks were like - fuck it, let's do it. We read the Rock' N' Roll handbook & voila; we were a band! You'll have to wait for our movie The Reign of Candyass for the full titillating story.
HR: I always wanted to rock with chicks.
What's the band's current lineup?
G: Me - vocals, Hopey Rock: guitar, Siani Pop: bass (on East Coast), Karen Curious: bass (on west coast), Eric Cock: drums (on east coast), Becky Wreck: drums (on West Coast).
Has this been the lineup since the beginning?
G: Our lineup has changed more fucking times that I've changed my underwear.
Who named the band and what was the inspiration for it?
G: I wanted to be WICKED WANDA or the SLUTS, or the VIRGINS. No one else like it but we all liked the word candy so we played around with words to go with. Candyass seemed just right cuz it can mean many things: delicious or tough or faggot or wimp, etc.
What are the most prominent influences on the band's musicianship and lyrical content?
G: The lyrics are all real life or made up stories from my sick head. Musically we take inspiration from the GO-GO'S, the LUNACHICKS, and a lot comes to Hopey in dreams.
HR: So much. in NY so much of my life revolved around seeing bands & DJing & dancing so I think all music even 101.1 CBS FM (oldies station) has been a strong influence for me. Lyrically my humor with my friends & jokes that go too far are the basic content.
How big a response has your current CD gotten so far?
G: We now have bodyguards 24/7 and we are SO fucking rich it's insane.
HR: It seems huge cause it's our first & the fans have been waiting.
Is there any new material you've been working on?
G: We're writing a full-length with some sick! sick! songs. We are definitely fine-tuning our sound.
HR: Lots!!! Tons!!!!
Are the band satisfied with the state of Punk Rock these days? What changes would you like to see happen?
G: The NYC Rock scene is in a sad state - there's barely any venues to play. LA is so fake I can't bear it. I'd love to see some mid-size places like CB's, the Pyramid, or Coney Island High explode again. When Coney was open there was such a family vibe in the scene. We played our first show there.
HR: Well not really. I think Punk was designed to be an impetus (she uses a word that looks like "inertia"?? Um... I replaced it with impetus) for rebellion. So many bands are mediocre and I think an explosion is due soon and I think it will happen in NYC. That's the city that needs it most.
Do you guys read a lot of fanzines from the Punk scene? Which ones would you recommend? Which bands in the Punk scene would you recommend to people?
G: I don't read a lot of fanzines. It's like reading a stranger's diary if you don't know who they're talking about. I recommend everyone listen to CANDY ASS, the TOILET BOYS, LUNACHICKS, and the BULLYS.
What's the band's opinion on the mainstreamization of Punk Rock? Is this generally a good thing or a bad thing to you?
G: I grew up in a really isolated rural area so I only heard or saw stuff if was mainstream (lots of BON JOVI) so to me it's cool cuz it's more accessible in more places for kids growing up in East Jesus like I did.
HR: Like who? It's not really Punk Rock! Well, I don't feel like it's good or bad. People need to eat.
What do the band consider their most important goal?
G: To tour, record more, tour more, be on the radio, make awesome music videos and tour more!
HR: To have fun and take advantage of having a P.A. in front of you.
Anything you wish to close with?
G: To chase your fucking dreams and make that shit happen. Wild fantasies come true with hard work! Put that on a Hallmark card honey!
HR: This is just the beginning.
