Describe Cadaver's recent Earache effort Discipline. What sort of an experience was it to record the album?
We had a intense studio periode where we recorded everything as live as possible. We wanted this to be very direct and raw, and this was tthe general feeling when we recorded it.
In what ways does it compare to past material?
I dont know. It's hard for me to tell since I write and play it. Its easier to draw such line if your just a listener I guess.
Since the release of Discipline how has it been received by the press altogether?
We've recieved a very good repsonse so far so I'm happy with that.
How did Cadaver's recent tour with Morbid Angel and Zyklon turn out for all involved?
Very good. We got along with everyone on the tour very well and had a great time.
In how many different countries did you appear?
Twelve.
Any memorable appearances that made you want to perform in a particular country again?
France, Spain, Iatly and the UK.
What is the band's current lineup today?
Czral - drums; Apollyon - vocals; LJ Balvaz - bass; me on guitar as always.
What circumstances led you to hooking up with these musicians?
I got to know Czral and Apollyon in 1995 through the Aura Noir's fisrt CD. I was impressed by the feeling they had and we stayed in touch over the years. When I was finished recording with Satyricon in 1999 I asked Czral and LJ Balvaz to join up for some jams with some songs I had laying around and it took of from there. LJ Balvaz is an old friend of mine which should have been in the old Cadaver, but played guitar then and not bass. It's good to have him in this band now.
Would you say this is lineup is sufficiently strong to handle older material as well as what is to be found on Discipline?
The old shit is pretty easy to grasp for this crew, so no problem there.
The bio sheet that Earache provide for Discipline states you recently collaborated with Satyricon and Mayhem on their recent efforts. What led to these arrangements?
Norway is small and we all know each other. I've done some freelance jobs for Moonfog throughout the years, so when Satyr wanted me on his record I took the challange. Maniac (Mayhem) and I had plans for some sort of electronic project for some time when him and Blasphemer called me up to do this track for their album. It turned out pretty good I think.
Do you maintain contact with these bands regularly?
Yes.
What is your opinion of the Norwegian black metal explosion altogether in addition to the occasional schism occurring between supporters of black and death metal? In what ways, if any, would you say Cadaver was instrumental in the development of Norwegian black metal?
I have no opinion about this. I dont see things the way the fans of this music tend to see it. I dont think Cadaver had much inpact on the Norwegian black metal "wave," other than that the guys playing in most of these bands used to dig us.
In what ways does Discipline differ from other death metal releases, both in musical and lyrical terms? How much effort went into songwriting to make this album stand out from all others?
I dont write stuff to please anyone else but me. The idea was to make an album that had it's own sound and identity towards what we as a band can do. It's not very complicated thinking behind every aspect one do when you write songs. It's all about giving a general feeling of great metal, and nothing more.
When Cadaver disbanded for a while in the early nineties, you spent a stint performing with Apoptygma Berzerk. How far removed musically was this band from what you were accustomed to playing while in Cadaver?
The main difference was that I could play very improvised and be drunk without anyone noticing anything wrong.
Did you view the material you wrote for them an opportunity to experiment with differing styles?
I didnt write for them. I'm experimenting with differnet styles in other project I have. APB was all about getting out touring and do crazy shit on the road for me. We had great fun, but I felt that I wasn't a part of their scene at all which led to funny insident with their fans. Most Gothic/EBM bands bore me alot... Very unmusical gang of people most of them. Fasion victims more than musichans. I cant take people that actually like Electric Hellfire Club and London after midnight seriously.
What circumstances eventually led to your decision to reform Cadaver?
The one mentioned above. APB got very big and took to much time to be in, not feeling that I had anything to do with the music. I'm old shcool. I dont sign records I'm not on or do interviews with questions like "Whats your favorite Gothic record?" I needed my own space. I'm not dissing APB, we're still firends, but I need to have my own thing going to be a happy camper.
Which bands that you admire most would you most like to tour with to support upcoming releases?
I admire Morbid Angel and have tooured with them. I admire all bands that never give up beliving in what they do. I'd like to tour with VoiVod.
Is there anything of particular interest that Cadaver have in the works for the immediate future, such as a home video?
There's a video on our website. We're going to develope our website into a new level now. That's the imidiate thing.
Where do you see extreme music headed in the days to come? What do you believe will be Cadaver's role in this?
I dont know. I'll keep doing this as long as it gives me something back. Hopefully we're little ahead of our time and can inspire other bands to do more than to dress up like Kiss to make this music interesting.
