What motivated you to start a fanzine? What music does it cover?
I had a sleepless night when I started thinking about life, and realized that life is painfully short. So I thought that before I die, I must leave something behind for people to remember me by - Bleed magazine was born! It covers mainly extreme metal and anything that comes under that banner.
When did the premier issue of Bleed come out? In what ways has the zine improved since then? How many issues of Bleed are out now?
If I remember, it should be May 1995. It grew considerably fast and by issue 4, I am already interviewing big time bands like Moonspell and Gehenna. We turned professional by issue 6, which is our current issue. We used to be a simple xeroxed zine but now we are a pro-printed magazine.
How many bands have you featured in Bleed? Have they been mostly local bands or more well known bands?
We have covered more or less 60 odd bands from all over the world. Our interview policy is that we provide a balance of both well-known and underground bands, as long as they have a good release and they sent us a promo. Singapore metal bands are far and few but we interview them as long as they are good.
How is the underground scene doing over there? How does it compare to the scene in the States? Do the bands get along well? Are there a lot of fanzines to read over there? Which ones stand out the most in your opinion?
The scene here I must admit is nothing like the States. Over here is still in the embryo stage but some of the local bands are doing better in Malaysia than in Singapore. Currently, it is picking with metal festivals and better releases. People here are starting to organise things instead of waiting for something to happen, and that is a positive sign. Bands are releasing their own albums instead of waiting for a label to sign, alot of DIY efforts. As far as I know the bands got along well but there are always different camps with different attitudes that don't see eye to eye. Fanzines here are scarce. They died off as fast as they appeared.Bleed Magazine is the 1 & only Singapore Most Explict's Metal Magazine.
What effect do you believe the internet has had on the metal underground?
The internet truly brought bands, mags and labels closer. It has become a vital tool for the metal underground for a better faster communication. Bands can set up their webpage, post their tracks as MP3s, link it to a popular site and could reach like thousands of people. The same goes for labels. But of course, in the pre-digital age, snail mail can really create sheer excitement, like when you receive some letters or demos from abroad. Internet can't do that.
Do you watch a lot of horror movies? If so, which are your favorite ones?
No, I don't really watch alot of horror movies. But my favourites are The Exocist and The Ring(underground Japanese shock flick!). And I don't advise anyone with a weak heart to watch The Ring. Surprisingly, it doesn't even have any gore/horror in it. Just plain shocking scenarios and eerie soundtrack.Anyway i prefer XXX movies......
What advice would you give to someone starting a zine for the first time?
Always plan ahead. Set a direction and time frame in which the zine is going to develop. Basically to be thick skinned and must be always ready to take shit. Running a zine is not going to be easy, shitty people give you shit, and you got to deal with them.
What bands are you into? Which bands that you haven't interviewed yet would you most like to?
I am very much into bands that can create atmospheres within their music, metal or not. Currently, I am listening to Finntroll now. Good folk riffs in the hearty tunes of black metal. I would most want to interview Slayer and Iron Maiden because of their influential impact. But for the mag, it must be a live interview Mayhem & Deicide. They have such a rich history.
What would you most like to accomplish with Bleed?
Of course to be recognised as a quality extreme metal magazine from Singapore. We also want to be a metal platform linking Asia metal scene to the rest of the world.
Anything you wish to sign off with?
Well, Bleed mag issue 7 will be available by early Feb 2000, make sure you have your copy.See you in Hell long live metal!
