Your coal black hair, dark as night.
Your eyes, dark ebony.
From the moment I first saw them,
I wanted you for me.
My passions sought your trembling heart
where fear was common place.
But, I could not avert my eyes
from your lovely face.
I know you are another's.
I was anothers' too.
Yet from the first time that our eyes met,
I've thought of no one else but you.
Though our eyes had met but briefly
I hungered for your touch.
You are the one my heart desires
I long for you so much.
We smile each time our eyes meet.
But, we never know just why.
Perhaps, it is that soft, warm feeling
I find in your dark ebony eyes.
How can I reply to your questions fairly
about your first love that was true?
"Yes!" I say, "Break his heart,
and tell him I love you."
Write it in a letter,
subtly or bold.
I care not how you say it love,
if you are mine to hold.
And the next time that he holds you,
God, I pray you do think of me.
Whisper a dozen lies into his ear,
all words which hold true for me.
I hate knowing how this hurts you.
But, love, I'm hurting too.
How can I go on loving her,
as much as I love you?
I can't give you all of the answers
to the questions on your lips.
Unless they're revelations revealed
when we gently kiss.
I know I can pretend no longer;
fabricating alibis.
So, don't tell him that you love him
when you know that it's a lie.
Bear no scarlet letter
on your precious heart.
We'll set our consciences free of them.
We'll make another start.
Dispatch the woes you feel, dear,
ease your guilted mind.
There is no sin in the love we share.
Fate's just not been kind.
I dream of us each moment
of every night and day.
Longing for the dream, my love,
when I've chased your cares away.
Let's tear away our olde facades;
release your many cares.
Tell him you can't hold him
while wishing I were there.
Stop condemning us for love.
stop pining in dispair.
Smile and proudly undisguise
our love's sweet affair.
Keep writing the truth if only to me,
but, I pray you let him know
that we are each other's in body
as we are one in soul.
Once we have told them
of how our love has come to be,
I'll loving gaze into your eyes
of deep, dark ebony.
So let's tell them both my darling,
let's let our hearts be bold.
I'll tell her of Dark Ebony;
you tell him of Olive Gold.
***This is the second part of, 'Olive Gold' (also included in this
compilation), a epic poem which is composed of five poems to tell one
story. I've always hated it's repetitious style, but, it was a style I
played with while learning about poetry.
