"What exactly is a ritual and how do you go about having one?"

That’s a good question. A ritual is a set of actions performed for a specific purpose. Within Wicca, there’s basically three main reasons for doing a ritual. The first is alignment with divinity, elevating the spiritual focus or consciousness of the practitioner. The second is to celebrate a special day, time or event, such as a Sabbat, full moon, or personal transition. The third is to create or manifest a goal through magic and spell-crafting. A ritual can range from something very simple and short performed almost completely in your head through meditation/prayer, to very elaborate done with a whole group of people and include fancy tools, chanting, even a dramatization acted out. Most ritual done by solitary practitioners tends to be on the more simple side. Ritual most often will take place at your altar and can be done inside or outside, though most prefer to perform ritual outside if possible as it’s (obviously) closer to nature. Below is a very basic outline of how a ritual might go. Of course, a ritual could go very differently than what’s below, it all depends on how you choose to do things.

1. Preperation:
The first thing you need to do is decide the exact intent of the ritual you’re going to perform and all the reasoning behind it. Perhaps meditate on it or think it out, plan what you need to say/do. Think about all the correspondences. Should your ritual be done during a certain time? During the new, waxing, full, waning Moon; during a certain time of the year/week; during the nite or day? Decide what tools (if any) you will need. Ready your altar and everything you will need.

2. Casting the Circle:
Cleanse the space by burning sage/using sea salt, or something similar.
Cast a protective circle around your altar/ritual area using your mind. You can direct the energy through your athame, wand, (or your finger). {I usually cast my circle with a stick of incense.} Then you can call/invite the Goddess and God, & invoke the elements. This can be done a number of different ways, it’s up to you how you do it.

3. The Ritual:
Once you have your circle up, the Lord and Lady present, and the elements invoked, it’s time for the "meat" of the ritual. This is where you clearly express the ritual’s intent. This can be done through song, chant, spoken words, meditation, a play, or whatever else you can think of or through a combination of things.

4. Libation:
Next you’ll most likely want to share with/leave an offering for, the Goddess/God. Bless some wine and cakes (or juice and cookies..) Take a drink of the beverage and eat a cake/brownie/cookie or whatever you have and then offer some to the Goddess. (Pour the wine into the ground and leave a cookie there. Or pour them into a special libation dish to leave outside later.)

5. Clean-up:
Once all the above is done, you can now thank and dismiss the Goddess and God and the elements and close the circle. When you’re completely finished with a ritual you should ground yourself (release excess energy built up during ritual). Grounding is very important, as if you never ground yourself energy will just keep building up and can cause problems. There are many different ways in which to ground yourself. An easy way is just to lay on the ground on your back and visualize the excess energy draining out of your body and back into the Earth.

I explained as well as I could about what a ritual is and how one might go.
Of course, it’s always important to get as much information from as many different sources as possible. Part of the beauty of Wicca is that it’s open to interpretation. Different people believe different things and can do things quite differently than one another. You have to decide what you believe and choose how you do things accordingly. No one can tell you exactly what to do. [:
