A Valentine's Day Rainstorm
By: A.C. Felicity *me*
As long as he could remember Tim never knew a more cold, rainy Valentine's Day. It depressed him as he rode the bus; his girlfriend of a month had dumped him three weeks ago. Tim was a popular, cute guy. He was the captian of the Sophmore football team. He had blue eyes and short, wild blond hair. He had always had a girlfriend, ever since sixth grade. It seemed that the wiper blade taunted him. His friend John turned to him to ask him why he was so quiet. Thought was one thing that the handsome, popular, young man had never understood.
As he stepped off the bus he had a revolution, he would ask out Becky! She was single! What better day than on Valentine's day! A new hope and revelation came over him. He went to his locker. As he emptied his books and placed others in his bookbag he realized that he had no Valentine's gift for Becky. Then he serched his locker until he found it. It was an old box of chocolates intended for his girlfriend. Good thing he kept it, even after the break-up; he changed the name and words on the attached card.
Throughout first hour Tim was restless, Becky was in his third hour class. The teacher babbled on endlessly. The class had to read a version of Beauty and the Beast. How he hated that dumb old story! One of his friends commented these exact thoughts and Tim agreed. The teacher cried at the end, but Tim thought the story was weird.
After hours, or so it seemed, of utter torment, Tim entered third hour. He sat in his usual seat, Becky sat but two seats from his left. Becky came in and sat down. As Tim slowly tried to speak to her Catrina sat down. How he cursed her, for she was the obstacle that stood between him and Becky. The teacher handed out study packets for tommorrows test and informed the class they were to work on it individually and quietly.
Tim tried to speak to Becky but the teacher scorned him. He began to hate Catrina, the ugly weirdo. She was that unpopular, smart girl who always spoke her oppinions aloud. She hung around with people like herself. Everyone that has ever gone to highschool knows THAT girl. Her frizzy blondish/brownish hair hung down her shoulders wild and poorly brushed. Her eyes were a strange green shade.
That was when Tim gazed at the beautiful Becky. Everyone's school has had one of her kind. Head cheerleader, golden blond hair, blue eyes, and a clear complexion that was the envy of average girls. To Tim she was the goddess Venus, but he didn't know anything about Roman myth. She was a straight B+ student. Tim was dying to talk to her, and give her the chocolates from his book-bag. He really didn't do any of his work.
The hour ended, and the only class he had with Becky! He went to lunch. How the food was bitter. Then he realized that he could catch Becky on the way to the bus. He happily munched on his lunch. His friends started to throw food at Milton. Milton was your typical nerd. Tim was sure that with compitition like Milton he would easily win Becky's heart.
The day dragged on endlessly, and Tim felt constantly tormented by all the guys and girls that were "In Love" on this day. He finished last hour and rushed to his locker. He ran out quickly outside. Then he gained sight of Becky and ran to her.
She was barely out the door when the rain's wrath came upon her. Her make-up smeared with a vengeance. Her hair looked crappy. Her mascara ran. Tim fell backwards in fright. Becky scrambled into her purse and within minutes had re-applied her make-up. That fake, Tim started to realize that beauty wasn't even skin deep these days. It was like Beauty and the Beast where the Beauty turned into a beast. Yuck!
He trudged toward his bus, he ran into Catrina. She rode his bus. He paused for a moment as they both stood outside the door for a moment. She took off her glasses; it's obvious that someone like her would wear them. They had fogged-up with the rain. Tim gasped, because she was gorgeous. Her hair had a halo of light frizz. Her cheeks were a deep red from the cold. She was drenched. She looked-up from wiping her glasses to find Tim looking at her in a way, a strange admiring way. Her emerald green eyes stared into his. His heart skipped a beat.
"Tim, why are you staring?" She asked.
"I wanted to ask you to be my Valentine." His voice shook.
"I'm sorry, I have a boyfriend, it's Milton. Do you know him?"
"Yeah..."That was the last thing he said to her as they entered the bus.
She sat next to Milton. Tim was angry, she chose a nerd over him! His heart seemed to suddenly change, he liked Milton. Milton, though a nerd, was kind and, well though once Tim would deny it, funny too. Tim thought only of Catrina on the way home. She was so sweet, smart, kind, but mainly honest. She seemed content and happy. She had many good friends, who cared about her.
The next day Tim walked shyly over to Milton and Catrina's table. He asked to sit with them. Though wearied by the way Tim treated them before, they let him sit with there. Tim's old friends never talked to him ever again. That was alright with him. Tim within two weeks became best friends with Milton. Catrina tutored him and taught him philosophy. The trio went to college together. Tim and Milton shared a dorm. As for Milton and Catrina, they broke-up their senior year, but remained the best of friends forever.
Tim was never the same, from that day on he loved Catrina. They never became more than friends. Soon after this fateful Valentine's day, Tim's parents remembered him to become a better person. He became a teacher of philosophy at college. Catrina became a news reporter; Tim watched her show faithfully everyday. Milton became a world famous computer mastermind.
Tim eventually married and had children. When he told the tale of how he became a better person his children smiled. "So, it was your love for Catrina that changed your life forever?" Asked his daughter Catrina, whom he had named after his best friend. "No, my children, it was the truth that lies in everyday, revealing moments, that changed my soul forever. Some may take years to find the truth in themselves. Others find it, in the beauty of a Valentine's Day rainstorm."
