The first ever artificially inseminated African Elephant, Kubwa, at the Indianapolis Zoo has given birth to a baby girl
March 6, 2000! Two EarthCam cameras allow you to watch the growth of the
baby elephant and the daily activities inside the Elephant Yard. Over the
next few months Mom (Kubwa) has to teach baby what she needs to know,
introduce her to the other elephants, and teach her how to interact with the
keepers.
The Indianapolis Zoological Society has become
the leader in the campaign for survival of the African elephant. They have
focused intensive research efforts on this species since 1970 and
participate in the American Zoological Association (AZA) Elephant Species
Survival Plan (SSP) program.
