| *WHO ARE LIBERTARIANS?* "All the good ideas seem to be coming from Libertarians...if Lincoln were alive today, he would be studying Libertarianism." --USA "Journalist of the Century" Hugh Downs, 20/20 Libertarianism is a philosophy tracing its roots to Aristotle,Epicurus, Cicero,Mencius and Lao-tse. Outlined by Thomas Jefferson it was propounded after the Left-Right fusion in the USA in 1971. Here are some things that Libertarians have brought about, and some modern Libertarians and sympathizers of Libertarianism whom you might not at first associate with Libertarianism. *10 THINGS LIBERTARIANS HAVE DONE* (OR HELPED BRING ABOUT)... FALL OF THE DICTATORS Libertarians were active in reviving Classical Liberalism worldwide and took concrete steps in the fall of the Latin, African and Soviet dictatorships. A Russian Libertarian literally pulled the plug on Red communications via internet helping derail the counter-coup and planned bloodbath. THE EARNED INCOME CREDIT PROGRAM This program, which provides up to $4,000 yearly+ to low-income families, was initially proposed by Milton Friedman and lobbied for by Libertarians who showed how to finance it from government efficiency savings. AIRLINE AND OTHER DEREGULATION These have led to more choices, up to 80% lower costs and massive safety increases as people are able to do what makes sense instead of what pressure groups desire. CABLE TV AND INTERNET Libertarians fought attempts to fossilize TV at 4 channels and regulate all computer production by IBM. PEACE IN NAMIBIA Namibian Libertarians and LIO proposed the structure that brought peace there and prevented a bloody takeover. SOCIAL SECURITY PRIVATIZATION Libertarians have shown how to turn workers into millionaires with programs in Chile and new zealand and partial programs elsewhere and have an assured retirement. DISCUSSION OF PRIVATIZATION Privatization and community devolution is widely discussed in the year 2000. Libertarians have advised or promoted many such projects from police to utilities while fighting against sweetheart-deal "pseudo-privatization" such as in Russia and Columbia, which is really fascism. THE ALASKA MODEL The Alaska Permanent Fund, designed by Libertarians and put forth by Libertarian legislators, funds payments of mearly $8000 to families of four in Alaska while accumulating $400,000 of capital per family from government savings. Alaska also now has no State income tax and has had legalized marihuana for prsonal use at home without social chaos. THE STOCK BOOM Libertarians took pivotal rolls in commodity and stock deregulations and restraint on inflation by the US Federal reserve, leading to a mass world boom--10,000% stock rise in 25 years. CIVIL LIBERTIES, SOCIAL OPTIONS ON THE AGENDA Libertarians have begun a new dialogue on removing coercive habits and structures from all areas of society, advancing better civil protections, fighting lifestyle regulations in areas from recreational substances to the right of mother's to breast feed and fathers to educate kids at home unregulated, and numerous petty zoning, regulatory, prison, and other abuses. Libertarians have exposed and dcumented that government and its corporate, licensing and union instrumentalities are the real culprits and not solution in ecological pollution, poor education, poverty, and destruction of our civil and economic infrastructure. DAVID FRIEDMAN *Economists* ALAN GREENSPAN THOMAS SOWELL *Historical Figures* THOMAS JEFFERSON In a little noticed series of letters written while he was yet president in 1810, Jefferson stated to Gov. Tylerand others the federal government must limit itself to defense, and in time all governments would be reduced in size to units of 100 families and replace the Constitution "when the time is ripe." Libertarian Mayor Art Olivier recently demonstrated this in California, using Libertarian structures that e.g. reduced crime over one third in a short period and no tax money. President Jefferson, was ahead of our time in many other ways, as a regular smoker of marihuana as were many Americans of the time, he was at one point the second largest grower of Marihuana--the largest being perhaps George Washington, and denounced all attempts to limit people's lifestyles. Jefferson's proposal was independently approached by Libertarians such as philosopher John Hospers two centuries later. *** It is time for humanity to grow up and learn to trust. |
