Duke of Edinburgh (D of E) Award
At cadets we also do the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. The D of E has 3 levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold. The Bronze and Silver D of E both consist of a physical, where cadets have to take part in various sports until they get the points required. (Each sport has a certain amount awarded to it). It also has a service where the cadets have to attend a 6-week course at fire, police or ambulance services. It also involves a skill where cadets must choose an activity, such as taking their leading cadet exam. And finally there is the expedition, a practice to see if the cadets can use compasses and can map read, and the final where the cadets have to walk 15 miles in two days and the silver D of E they have to walk 30 miles in 3 days.
At the Gold level you need to repeat the steps above but carry them out for longer periods of time. There is also an added section this is 'residential' where you have to stay away from home for a week taking part in various activities such as overseas camp with other cadets.
Once you have passed either of the D of E awards you are given a badge to sew onto you're uniform and a certificate. When you have passed the Gold D of E award you are presented it by the Duke Of Edinburgh himself at Buckingham Palace.
The different sections of the award are recorded in a record book. The Bronze and Silver awards are combined into one book but there is a separate book for the Gold award.
